The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde: A Staple in its Collection

The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde, which has become a staple for its collection, was nearly two hundred years in the future of Peirre Jaquet-Droz, who had recently taken an interest in clock making. The humble beginnings of the luxury watchmaker began on a small farm in 1721, and grew from the creation of precision grandfather clocks to the splendid examples we now find in the Jaquet-Droz gallery of magnificent horological masterpieces.

Grande Seconde

It was Jaquet-Droz’ gift for crafting brilliant timepieces for a discriminating clientele of wealthy clients that the company was born. Now carrying on the tradition, that the 18th cetury pocket watch of the famed craftsman was reimagined in 2002, into the Grande Seconde wristwatch, that would spawn an entire collection. Impressive and creative modifications have been made to the piece, which include the infusion of complications that complement the original traditions of the spirit of the founder.

Identifying elements embodied in the Grande Seconde

Jaquet Droz has taken an intellectual approach to refining the elements of the original pocket watch, while keeping the signature properties firmly intact. We begin with the dial configuration that holds its signature “figure eight” design for aesthetics and function. With this said, all the indications which are powered by the movement are kept within these parameters, preserving the original engineering principles and distinctions which make it uniquely Jacquet Droz. Sub dials are inserted into the upper and lower portions of the figure with no radical departures from originality. This allows for the infusions of new elements without disrupting the authentic flow.

What is further allowed

This leaves the remainder of the remainder of the dial area for creative and artistic expression, and if you will, the inclusion of enhanced aesthetics. With original principles left firmly intact, the Grande Seconde, was produced in a choice of white or black ceramic case options, and presented recently at Basel. This example is the spawn of a new generation that follows the founders principles and philosophies for luxury watchmaking. It also stands as the leader in a collection that offers greater variety within the established parameters for maintaining a loyalty and commitment to the preservation of the brand.

Modernity meets yesteryear

A closer look at the Grande Seconde reveals the tradition of the figure eight in a ceramic rendering which is further modernized by offering a choice of ivory or black. The inclusion of guilloched dial inclusive of the clous de Paris pattern, we get a melding of old world charm and a hint of the current era in one example.

More modern extension

Within the collection, those who are partial to the classic look, yet want all the modern functions may resort to the Grande Seconde Quantieme Satin Brushed. It features dials sporting a sunray pattern, with a sleek appearance, reminiscent of the 21st century. A more practical approach of placing the date indication at the lower subdial at the Quantieme is more appealing to those with 21st century tastes. You have your choice of either a 39mm or 43mm case size or even an enamel version of the dial if this is your preference.

Grande Seconde Moon

Perhaps among the most challenging examples for the watchmaker has been the Grande Seconde Moon. Difficult, but not impossible, the moon phase is a traditional complication that is most commonly contained within circular subdials. The issue was in making the precision adjustments that would result in long term accuracy. Jaquet-Droze accomplished the requirement for precision timekeeping in a self winding moon phase complication that maintains accuracy for 122 years and 46 days before needing further adjustments. The 266OQL self-winding movement is responsible for the astronomical moon phase precision technology that ensures this feature. The Grande Seconde Moon is available in several variants which include more modern aesthetics or those which cater to the tastes of the more traditional and classic minded clients.

Jaquet-Droz offers patrons the authentic quality of the tradition of the brand in customizable, hand built pieces that may either move historical elements forward in time, or meld modern complications with the charm of the traditions of the 18th century. The revival of the authentic spirit of Jaquet-Droze and the intelligent design has produced what is now a staple for the highly respected collection that has followed the Grande Seconde.
