The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt
There is a hotel that is located within 900 yards of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. There are three different pyramid complexes Which date back into antiquity around 4,500 years in history. The three main periods are the tombs of three important pharaohs. Just in front of the Pyramids you’ll find the Great Sphinx. You can either book a tour through a variety of participating travel agencies or stay in the hotel that is located in close proximity and go on your own. We recommend the guided tour though, because it is filled with interesting facts that are shared by a knowledgeable guide.
Visit Tunis, Tunisia
When planning your trip to North Africa you must include a trip to the city of Tunis in Tunisia. There are many reasons to visit this popular tourist destination. While you’re there you can visit the Ez-Zitouna Mosque or Ezzitouna Mosque or Mosque of El-Zituna. This is a large mosque that was originally transferred fro the ruins of the ancient city of Carthage. Tunis is the capital city of Tunisia and it offers some of the best museums in all of North Africa. Do plan on checking out the Bardo National Museum while you’re there as well as the coastal village of Sidi Bou Said. It’s only 20 miles from the capital and the ancient ruins of Carthage are located in between the two cities.
Djemma El-Fna Square, MoroccoIt’s located in the Medina quarter of Marrakesh and the market place is one of the more popular tourist attractions. One of the more interesting things about the marketplace is that the food stalls don’t begin to appear until the sun starts to go down. Marraketh is located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and it’s filled with the sounds and smells of the surrounding culture. It’s one of the most historical tourist attractions in all of North Africa. Its filled with places where you can sample the cuisine as well as touring the Saadian Tombs, the El Badi Palace and much more.
Visit the Colossi of Memnon in Luxor, Egypt
This is another popular tourist site. You’ll behold the two colossal statues on your trip but there’s a lot more to see when you’re in Luxor, Egypt. It’s one of the most highly recommended vacation spots in North Africa. Go to Philae Temple
Philae is another popular destination in North Africa located in the region of Nubia in Aswan, in Egypt. Philae is an island located in the Aswan Lower Dam reservoir. It is the home to the Philae Temple. It was founded in 380-362 BC and is an amazing Egyptian temple complex that is a must see.
The Temple of Edfu
The Temple of Edfu is also called the Temple of Horus the falcon headed god. It is found between the cities of Luxor and Aswan in Egypt. It was discovered in the 1860s by Auguste Mariette, a French archaeologist. Construction of the temple was believed to have begun in 57 BC and the temple wasn’t completed until 237 BC. It took nearly two centuries to complete. The temple was built in a fashion that shows traditional Egyptian elements along with some influences of Greek architecture. Construction was ordered by Ptolemy III.
Abu Simbel, Egypt
Another highly recommended destination is Abu Simbel in Egypt. There is a lot to see and do when you’re there. We recommend planning your trip around the Abu Simbel festival which is held twice annually in February and again in October. This is an excellent location to view the two temples which were built for Pharoah Rameses II.
The Sahara Desert in the Matmata area
This is the place where portions of the Star Wars movies were filmed. The lovely dunes and salt lakes exhibit the beauty and wonder of the desert. The area features a collections of fortified granaries and stone forts which were built into the desert mountains centuries ago.
The Gilf Kebir plateau is located in the Sahara desert just southwest of Egypt, not far from the Libyan border. The painted caves were discovered in 1933 by a Hungarian explorer. It is also home to the famous and remote location that is known as the Cave of Swimmers. The paintings in the cave were a significant archaeological find.
Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The Atlas Mountains offer world-class skiing throughout the winter months of January through March. This is a highly recommended destination for visitors who will be there between the months of January and March, and who enjoy skiing in quality resorts. The Oukaimeden resort is at an elevation of 8,500 feet and is the highest mountain in the continent. It’s approximately fifty miles east of Marrakesh.
