10 Tips to Stay Positive Through Any Situation

Being positive is not the same as staying positive. Staying positive requires an effort on your part, especially during those very trying times. The tendency for many people is to look for someone to blame rather than realize they have no control over what goes on around them. You can start with a mindset that staying positive is possible, and to help you along here are 10 tips to stay positive through any situation.

  1. We begin with a somewhat unexpected source of positivism, British fashion designer Matthew Williamson.  According to Citasis, he said, “I’m continually inspired by nature, and the rainbow is one of nature’s greatest optical phenomenons. The sighting of a rainbow never fails to bring a smile to people’s faces. They signify optimism and positivity: with them comes the sunshine after the rain.” He is definite proof that you don’t have to be an English major to find a ways to stay positive. There is much to be said about nature, and there is much to be said about rainbows. There may not always be a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but it is the search that makes the journey worthwhile.
  2. Personal journals, the handwritten type, are not as common as they used to be. But writing slows you up, even if you only have average typing speed. Keep what psychologists call a gratitude journal. The idea is to write down and consider the things you have to be thankful for on an everyday basis. For example, be thankful for healthy children because it is on the days when they are sick that you appreciate them being healthy. Having a job or being healthy yourself are two other examples. Your view of life will change and your situation will seem to improve quicker than by focusing on the problems.
  3. Music directly connects with our emotions, and when those emotions are happy the brain releases that happy chemical dopamine. Listening to happy music every day is a way to keep your positive mood elevated regardless of the situation. Section off a part of your day – lunchtime is often the easiest – to plug in and listen to some happy tunes. If you have a friend who can stand your melodic voice, partner up and have a mini-sing along. But going solo also works too.
  4. Taking things slowly is one of the best, yet most overlooked, things you can do to stay positive. There is no doubt that the faster your life goes the more stressful it becomes. The more stress in your life, the less positive you feel. It’s easy to get caught up in the workday chaos, and it has a huge potential for wearing you down. Find times during the day to simply slow down and your positivity level will become more even.
  5. Resurrect an old idea by doing a random act of kindness every day. It can be in the form of an email or making a positive comment online about a YouTube song or music video that potentially hundreds of people can see! Sharing your positivity with others is the same thing as doubling down on your positive lifestyle. There are some studies that actually show people live longer by passing along their positive well-being.
  6. Be introspective enough to consider your own negative thinking and challenge its usefulness. Switching to a more positive perspective of the event or situation has been proven by literally hundreds of studies to convert those negative thoughts into optimistic ones and bring a balance to your day.
  7. Paying attention to your physical needs is essential to live a long and happier life. This means exercising regularly and eating properly. If you tend to grab for the snacks when you are angry or upset, you are not alone. (For the purposes of this article we will consider a drink a snack.) These only are a temporary fix to a longer term problem. To stay positive you need to look forward to a healthy meal. (We didn’t say Happy Meal.) Feeling healthy is about being healthy, and it is actually simple to do. Here you might want to take a page from the Japanese culture, where people separate their meals into smaller, diverse portions and eat slower.
  8. Putting a smile on your face can do wonders for you and the people you pass by on the street. You don’t want to have a forced smile, the kind that people will immediately know it is not genuine. But there is almost something in every environment that can generate a natural smile. A baby in a stroller, an attractive person (don’t be flirtatious though), or something that reminds you of one of your favorite songs are all obvious to people who are looking for them. If a smile is returned, all the better!
  9. Be excited about the future events of the day. We are not talking about every single event, but there are definitely positive moments that you are certain will come your way. For example, if you have children you may be happy to see them going to school or coming home. If both, then that’s a double bonus! These events don’t have to be earthshaking moments. In fact, it is often the little things that brighten up our days that we often take for granted.
  10. This last thing on this list, meditation, is something many people are familiar with and actually practice. For the non-practitioners you likely have someone you know who does meditate at different times during the day. You might be surprised to find out that only 7 minutes a day will improve your overall positivity level. Those 7 minutes also will allow you to sleep better at night because you will be less stressed out.
