Driving a car is more than just grabbing the steering wheel and hitting the road. It is an experience that makes the car you choose to drive in, matter. A pure driving experience can only be from a vehicle that gives thought to every detail; hence the Porsche cars make for excellent sports cars. Porsche has added another model to its lineup through the Porsche 718 Boxster T. The “T” models are not a new creation but rather a variation founded on the 1968 Porsche 911T which it revived in 2018 with the 2018 911 Carrera T. The “T” stands for “Touring,” and they have come back with an upgrade to the chassis, wheels, Torque vectoring rear differential among others. The 2020 Porsche 718T Boxster T is based on the standard, non –S 718 and has a few features that make Porsche charge a premium.
Manual vs. automatic
Some products limit your options, but this vehicle gives you two choices; you can go with an automatic or manual. An automated car will have you parting with at least $3210 more than the current 718 models, and it is worth the price. With an automatic, you can shift gear seamlessly, and if you are driving at high speed, then the seventh gear will reduce the engine rev significantly. If you love a manual vehicle, the 718T manual intervention comes with paddles on the steering wheel and a central gear selector from which you choose between push-to-downshift or pull-to-upshift actuation. This feature sets the 718 Boxster apart since even with the latest 2020 Porsche 911, you will not find it. Unfortunately, while the manual gearbox has an exquisite setup, the rev-matching function is disappointing because although it has excellent calibration once you select the Sport+ or Sport driving modes, you cannot deactivate it.
The car has a purist theme that enables buyers to replace the entire infotainment with a storage compartment; something that even the U.S customers would love, but unfortunately, the purist option will not make it here. As for the door handles, instead of metal, the car has fabric loops, and the seats are more of a basic unit with a minimalist two-way electronic equipment. Still, they facilitate your travel for miles without tiring. Maybe the point was to not add extra weight since installing the gasoline particulate filter already did that. The 20-inch wheels have dark paint while the lower body sides have unique decals which go hand in hand in pinning their classic look that allows buyers to place it in a class of its own. The car also has a manual lever that is shorter than other models and emblems of “718” and “Boxster T” in the interior.
Although the vehicles have not yet been confirmed on when they will arrive in the United States, they are expected in early in 2020 as the models for the year. The price is also not yet confirmed, but the car is likely to go for $10K more than the current standard Boxster which goes for $60,250. The “T” is more expensive than the non-T versions although they have similar features. By then, the manufacturers might even have come up with a customization menu that will further enhance the model.
Before his retirement, Porsche engineer August Achleitner who headed the 718 and 911 models said that the standard Boxster and Cayman models would have turbocharged flat-4 engines while the naturally aspirated 6-flat engine would be spared for the more potent versions. True to his word, the 718 Boxster T has a turbocharged flat-4 engine, and although some were not happy with the change, they have gotten used to it and are even appreciating the low-end torque. Besides, the engine goes in line with the car’s predecessors and the slightly raspy sound when the engine is throbbing being reminiscent of the Porsche 914 2.0.
It has a capacity of 2.0 liters which is enough to keep your speed in check since Porsche claims that the vehicle’s 0-to-60 mph dash will take only 4.9 seconds if you drive the standard six-speed manual. However, if you opt for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, then you can cover the same dash within 4.5 seconds. If you use the standard models as a basis to have a more realistic speed, you can expect to cover the dash within 3.9 seconds to 4.4 seconds. The top speed, however, does not depend on transmission and both transmissions have 170 mph. Moreover, the steering has an electrically-assisted power that enables you to attain incredible cornering speed without losing control.
