When you think about a Ford Mustang, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the same sports car that Ford has been making famous for decades. You probably don’t think about an all electric SUV that looks very little like its sportier namesake. However, you shouldn’t be so quick to discount the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. Designed for the 2021 model year, it’s definitely something that you won’t find anywhere else. You already know that it’s all electric, but is that really the only thing that makes this vehicle special? As it turns out, that’s probably the most mundane thing about this automobile. If you really want to know more about it, all you have to do is just keep reading.

One Car, Many Versions

Like a lot of vehicles, there are many different versions of this particular automobile for you to choose from, based on your own needs. The base model is respectable enough, with 266 horsepower and a surprising 230 mile range on a single charge. Compared to a lot of electric vehicles, that is definitely nothing to sneeze at. Even better, its selling price isn’t that much different from other SUVs with traditional internal combustion engines. You can have one of these to call your own for about $44,000. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something that packs a bit more of a punch (and you’re willing to spend a bit more money), consider the next level up. It is capable of offering 346 horsepower and it adds another 40 miles to the range. However, it also adds another $5,000 to the cost, and that’s if you only choose the most basic example of that particular model available. If you start adding the options that most people add, you can expect to spend considerably more, as it changes the price from around $49,000 to something in the neighborhood of $56,000. Last but not least, you have the highest and most elite trim model available, the GT. It’s just starting to roll off showroom floors and it has more than enough power for practically anything you could imagine, with 480 horsepower and a surprising 634 foot-pounds of torque. That’s saying quite a lot, especially for a vehicle that’s all electric. Ford claims that the vehicle is capable of going from 0 to 60 in about 3 and 1/2 seconds. It can be yours for about $65,000.

Not Your Grandfather’s Mustang

There’s no doubt about it, this is definitely not the same Mustang that your granddad or even your father was used to driving. For starters, it doesn’t have a traditional engine. If you open the hood, you’re not going to find anything except a place to store items. It is something that shocks a lot of people, even when they already know that the vehicle is all electric. There’s just something about opening the hood and not seeing an engine that is hard for a lot of people to wrap their head around. Furthermore, you can expect to spend a significant amount of time charging this vehicle if you want to get it fully charged so you can take advantage of its maximum range. Ford has partnered with vehicle charging stations that offer 240-volt charging cables. The problem is that it still takes a minimum of 10 hours to fully charge a vehicle, even with the special cables. It’s also worth noting that these charging stations are not widely available, at least not yet. It might not be a problem if you live in a major metropolitan area, provided that you don’t mind leaving your car sitting at a charging station all night long, but it could be a major problem for people interested in buying this vehicle if they live in a rural area.

While it is possible to charge the vehicle with a standard household plug, it’s definitely not practical to do so. That’s because these types of outlets are only capable of charging the vehicle at a rate of about three miles of range per hour. Unless you have a very short trip to make, you could literally charge the vehicle all night long and still not have enough range to go any appreciable distance. To put that in perspective, you could charge your vehicle with a standard household plug for 12 hours and gain a range of only about 36 miles. All electric vehicles are nice and they’re definitely far more environmentally friendly than their older counterparts, but this is a real problem that you have to consider before you decide to buy such an automobile. It doesn’t do anybody any good if you can’t charge it adequately without being forced to jump through hoops in order to do so. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t buy the vehicle, not by a long shot. However, it is food for thought so you know exactly what you’re getting into before you do something you’re likely to regret.

What Else Should You Know?

Before you make your decision, there are a few other things that you should know. First and foremost, this particular vehicle has a very basic instrument cluster that couldn’t be more straightforward if it tried. In fact, it really just tells you how fast you’re going and how much range you have before you need to charge the vehicle again. The overwhelming majority of information is on a large tablet-sized information center complete with a touch screen that’s likely to make you feel overwhelmed at first. Fortunately, it’s not as difficult to operate as it looks. In fact, you should be able to get used to it in no time. The other big thing that you’ll undoubtedly want to know is that the vehicle offers a sunroof that is made entirely of glass. That’s lovely, but you might consider asking yourself how much you would have to pay to have that sunroof repaired if something were to hit it and crack it. Again, it certainly doesn’t mean that you should steer away from buying this particular vehicle, but it is nice to know these types of things up front before you get truly serious about spending any money.

Now that you know more about the Mustang SUV that everyone is talking about, it’s easier to understand why there’s so much buzz about this particular automobile. If you’re in the market for an electric vehicle that looks good and performs just as well, this is something you might consider putting at the top of your list. It may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely a good fit for people who have the right resources at their fingertips.
