The 20 Best Darth Vader Quotes That Apply To Business

Darth Vader

Darth Vader was a former Jedi that turned from the light side of the force to the dark side. He achieved a great deal of success in his endeavors to elevate the evil Empire to supremacy. Throughout the "Star Wars" franchise he has made several quotes that have become catchphrases in popular culture. Some of them offer sage advice for entrepreneurs and others in the business world. We've sifted through hundreds of them to find the 20 best Darth Vader quotes that apply to business.

20. “He’s as clumsy as he is stupid.”

Vader was in charge of the military forces of the Empire. in "Episode V" Admiral Ozzel who was under his command flew too close to the Rebel base and this let them all know that the Empire's troops were planning a mission. This blatant mistake was made because of a lack of strategy and forethought. Ozzel failed Vader and this would be the last time. It's a lesson that we can all take to heart to be mindful when executing important tasks in business because our failures can significantly affect the outcome of the entire operation.

19. "You don't know the power of the dark side! I must obey my master."

When Luke Skywalker pleaded with Vader to turn away from the dark side to return to his original philosophy, Vader felt an internal struggle. He stated this quote as an explanation to his son that let him know regardless of the internal struggle, he was bound to obedience, although it was perhaps something he regretted. This quote makes us think about how one big mistake can lead us down a path that can lead to our ultimate destruction when it comes to business. Doing something illegal can have the same consequences. One mistake can lead to the necessity of making more when you choose the dark side of power for gain.

18. "I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further."

When Vader was dealing with Lando Calrissian to get his hands on Han Solo, he struck an original business agreement with Lando. He changed his original terms to a deal that was not satisfactory to Calrissian. When Lando protested, Vader, who had the upper hand made this statement that warned Lando that things could get a lot worse if he had a problem with the changes. This shows that those in power can and do make arbitrary changes in their agreements and there are times when there isn't much that you can do about it. The moral of this story is to be wary of who you do business with because it can backfire on you and leave you with no remedy. Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and accept injustice in the best interests of the larger group that would otherwise be affected by your protesting.

17. “Be careful not to choke on your aspirations.”

This is a Darth Vader quote that can definitely be applied to the business world. When you have big aspirations that can be a wonderful thing, unless you become arrogant and step on the wrong feet. Director Krennic only cared about his standing with the Emperor and he hurled a few insults at Darth Vader, making fun of his philosophies about "The Force." He pushed Vader to give him an example of how real and effective The Force truly can be. He put Krennic in a chokehold.

16. "I find your lack of faith disturbing"

This is another quote made by Darth Vader during the scene when he choked Director Krennic. This isn't something that you want a superior in your organization to think about you.Darth Vader was not just a warlord or one of the guys. He is not only a fighter and a leader but he is a member of an ancient tradition and a student under Emperor Plapatine. His entire existence revolves around the will of his master, his faith, and accomplishing the will of the Emperor. challenging his faith is not a wise move. The same is true of challenging the beliefs of a leader in business, or worse yet, the owner of a corporation who has built it from the ground up.

15. "You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me."

Vader was speaking about the power that emotions have over our decisions and over our effectiveness. This can very easily be applied to business as well. Learning to control your fear can help you to branch out into new and exciting ventures. It allows for spreading your wings and gaining new and improved skills and knowledge. While anger and hatred aren't exactly the emotions we embrace for success in business, you can unleash your enthusiasm. You can hate inefficiency and make changes that create a more efficient business environment.

14. "When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master."

Vader was speaking to his old mentor Obi Wan Kenobi. He learned the basics and some advanced techniques about using the force to accomplish good. He left his mentor while he was still learning about the ins and outs of the force. His new master was the evil Emperor who taught him how to harness his power more efficiently, but he also used Vader to achieve his own selfish goals. Vader was seduced by lies to join the dark side of the force and he essentially became a victim who lost all those that he loved and cared about because he was tricked into believing a lie. Choose your mentors carefully.

13. “Don’t be too proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”

Vader was making reference to the Death Star, an advanced technological force in the universe. The massive space station was fully equipped with a device that had the power and force to destroy an entire planet. Vader made a good point for business though. His statement warns against developing an interdependence on technology. There are other things that are just as important.

12. "If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador?”

In business leadership you must use your powers of both inductive and deductive reasoning. There are people in the business world who will lie to you or attempt to deceive you in other ways. It's important to question them when something neither looks nor feels right. You have to be on your guard and ask the hard questions to get to the truth of the matter.

11. “I sense something. A presence I have not felt since….”

This quote is an example of Darth Vader trusting his instincts. It had been many years since he had seen his old mentor Obi Wan Kenobe. Obi Wan was present in the space station and Vader sensed that he was nearby. This shows us that it's important to pay attention to subtle nuance and to trust what our gut is telling us. Vader's statement trailed off and he let it go, but deep in his heart he knew that he felt the presence of his old trainer. There are some things that we become aware of whether we see them with our physical eyes or not.

10. “That name no longer has any meaning for me.”

Vader was referring to the fact that when he was Anakin Skywalker he was a Jedi. He left the Jedi order to become a part of the Empire and join forces with the dark side of The Force. He had switched his allegiances and he now served a new entity and in his mind there was no looking back. He maintained his present loyalties and struggled to keep himself from returning to his former philosophy. His loyalty to the Empire was tested but in this instance he held fast to maintain it.

9. “All too easy.”

When Vader thought that he had captured Luke Skywalker in the chamber, he thought that he had easily achieved a difficult task. What appeared to be a done deal went terribly awry. Luke surprised him with incredible agility and skills and he wasn't as easy to capture as Vader had thought. If something seems too easy, it might actually not be as easy as you had once thought. Keep your guard up until you're certain that the job is done satisfactorily.

8. “Anakin Skywalker was weak. I destroyed him.”

Vader is speaking about his transformation from Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader. There were parts of his personality that didn't serve his new purpose so in essence, he destroyed the entire person in an attempt to be something that he really wasn't. What we can take away from this statement is that it's okay to change certain things about yourself that need improvement but you must also accept yourself for who you are. In the end, Vader returned to his true self and it's something that none of us can escape.

7. “From my point of view, the Jedi are evil.”

Our point of view can change throughout time. As Anakin Skywalker, Vader believed that the dark side was evil. Once he got a taste of the dark side, the Emperor was able to sway him into believing that his old order, the Jedi, were the evil ones. Vader had been decieved and he adopted a philosophy that was the opposite of what he truly believed. It's important to be careful about who you listen to in the business world and stick with your values instead of following others in shady ventures.

6.“He will not be permanently damaged.”

When Vader had Han Solo frozen in carbonite it appeared that he was dead. Vader assured those around him that there was no permanent damage to Solo. Although he had taken drastic measures to keep him immobile, he didn't want to damage him permanently. He took care of the acquisition to ensure that it was in good shape for delivery to Jabba the Hut. This was a part of a business deal. Vader had to deliver the goods and he did so.

5.“He’s all yours, bounty hunter. Reset the chamber for Skywalker.”

When Darth Vader made this statement he had just completed an important task by capturing Han Solo. He was making sure that the chamber was ready to capture the next victim. Vader was preparing for the task at hand and he wasn't wasting any time. Sometimes in business, when you're on a roll you have to keep the trajectory moving forward to get to the next job at hand.

4. “He’s just a boy.”

Vader assessed that Luke Skywalker was just a boy. This indicated that he underestimated the skills and abilities of Luke because of his age. This is something that happens frequently in the business world. Age discrimination isn't legal, but it's widely practiced. Don't judge a person's ability based on their age because you're likely to be mistaken.

3."I do not want the Emperor’s prize damaged.”

Vader knew the importance of pleasing his direct supervisor. The Emperor had high expectations for him, so he maintained a high level of quality control. He guided other workers under him to make sure that the "Emperor's Prize" which was the young Luke Skywalker, would not be harmed.

2.“If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.”

Vader knew how to judge the potential in young people. He saw that Luke was highly skilled and dedicated to his beliefs. He knew that if he and the Emperor could turn him to the dark side, he would become one of their best possible allies.

1. “Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.”

Vader impressed the importance of completing the Death Star ahead of schedule on the man in charge of the work force. When he told Vader that it was impossible to work any harder or any faster, he made the statement "Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them." This lit a fire under the supervisor who assured him that they would work double time. Sometimes you have to turn up the heat to increase motivation.
