Tag Heuer has done it again with the release of an innovative new wristwatch that melds cutting-edge technology in horology with a nod towards automotive excellence with the Carrera Carbon Heuer 02T Phantom. Carbon is the common element that forms the deep connection between the two and in celebration of the fifty-fifth anniversary of the Carrera, Tag Heuer launched a trio of new watches featuring carbon materials in the makeup. One, in particular, caught our attention and the Tag Heuer Carrera Carbon Heuer 02T Phantom is a watch that is deserving of a much closer look.
The aesthetics of the Phantom
The watch gets the latter part of its name because of its dark profile. The black aesthetic gives it a serious and almost dark tone. The case measures 45mm in diameter and is made of PVD-coated titanium material. It’s important to note here that the watch case is not made of carbon material, but the tachymeter styled bezel, however, is. The lugs are also made of carbon. The dial is an open worked style. The hands and indexes are plated with black gold.
The movement in Tag Heuer’s own in-house caliber It’s a self-winding edition integrated chronograph with a column-wheel in black and complementary black bridges with a Cotes de Geneve decor. The power reserve is 80 hours and the graceful yet intricate mechanical workings of the movement can be seen through the sapphire case back that lends a crystal clear view. The movement powering the Tag Heuer Carrera Carbon Heuer 02T Phantom beats at 4 Hz. The watch is water resistant for up to 100 meters. It’s truly a masterpiece in both form and in function.
The announcement of the Carrera Heuer 02
All three versions of the Carrera Heuer 02 special edition watches made their debut at Baselworld 2018. The family of the celebratory Carrera Heuer 02 comes with two variants. One feature rose gold and red highlights and the other with blue. This gives enthusiasts a choice of colors to suit their individual preferences for accent. The color highlights are uniquely placed on the chronograph hour and minutes hands as well as the color applied to the chapter ring of the running seconds’ subdial along with the rhodium-plated index tips.
Upon close examination, there are distinct differences which set the variants apart. In the rose gold example, the bezel is crafted of carbon material but the lugs are made of fine quality rose gold and you’ll also notice that there is a variety of rose gold elements placed around the dial. Rose gold plating has been applied to the rings for the counters of the chronograph hour and minutes, n addition to the application of rose gold plating for the main hour and minute hands along with the hour indexes. The hour indexes have been tipped with a red color for contrast as have the central second’s hand of the chronograph and hour and minute hands.
Strictly limited edition
The Tag Heuer Carrera Carbon Heuer 02T Phantom and its siblings are a trio that features an infusion of exotic materials and although there are just a few elements within each that are actually carbon, it’s enough to count. They are designed for the sports enthusiast who enjoys the feeling of luxury and a hint of sportiness at the same time. Each of the three new editions is made with a strict limitation on the number of pieces which will ever be produced, enhancing their current value and setting them up to become highly prized collector’s items in the future. The Tag Heuer Carrera Carbon in blue will only offer a total of 750 pieces with a price tag of $7,700. The Tage Heuer Carrera Carbon in the rose gold with red variation is limited to a production number of just 350 pieces and the price is $9,750. The Tag Heuer Carrera Carbon Tourbillion Phantom is limited to a total production run of only 500 pieces and will retail for $21,500 per watch.
The brand has thoughtfully delivered a new collection of wristwatches for the fan of motorsports as well as luxury timepieces. The Phantom has a dark yet inviting aesthetic that portrays the seriousness of racing with just a hint in a watch that is offered for those who celebrate the creation of the Carrera.
