A Closer Look at The 2019 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe

Perhaps the first and most important thing anyone can say about the 2019 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is that it seems like everyone who gets their hands on one is in love. Test driver, professional reviewer or owner, it doesn’t matter, this gorgeous retro-throwback inspired beast of a machine is storming on to the scene and reminding drivers what it feels like to really drive. Just looking at this car makes you wish we still lived in an era when everything was held to this standard.

Before electric cars, even before humvees, in a time when a car was more than a cliched style for a cliquish crowd, the predecessor of this beauty prowled the streets like a hunter stalking admiration and praise for more than its MPGs. Don’t let the curb appeal blind you to its other qualities. Much more than a “Pretty face,” the M850i deserves every bit of praise that reviewers and buyers are heaping on it so generously.

Features

Coming in at just about $111,900 (base model), the M805i xDrive Coupe has enough standard and optional features to justify the price a dozen times over. Here we can hit on a few of the high points, but it really has to be experienced first hand. The chassis has an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. If that’s not enough to make you sit up, the adaptive dampers and multilink rear suspension pair gorgeously with the standard staggered-size tires (245/35R-20s up front and 275/30R-20s in the rear).

The aerodynamic double bubble roof is a stunning nod to classic race cars. Front kidney grilles connect with a sleek and shiny chrome strip and thin headlights for an aggressively attractive front end view. The air outlets and character lines on the side show off a nice transition from the narrower front end to the wide hips in back. Finishing off the look is that sexy sloped rear with the slim spoiler and 3D taillights.

The cockpit on the 8-series is a thing of beauty as well. Unlike the ultra classic exterior, the futuristic instrumentation and modern styling put you in an innovative and cutting edge world of your own. Far from the dissonance you might expect going from the exterior to sitting in the drivers’ seat, it blends seamlessly. Combining the best parts of classic cars with the next generation is no easy feat, but the M850i somehow pulls it off with style to spare.

Under the Hood

The power and handling in this model has been compared to a number of high-end cars, but rather than trying for an analogy, let’s simply say that the feel of driving one of these machines is enough to make the decision for you when you’re shopping around for your next car.

On the Outside Looking In

Have we mentioned how good looking this car is yet? It’s been almost two decades since BMW put out anything that could compete with the sheer beauty of the M850i. Unlike the last few years where the stylistic choices were less exciting, this sleek classic looking car reminds us of the race cars we grew up with.

  • DimensionsWheelbase: 111.1
  • Length: 191.2
  • Width (without mirrors): 74.9

Final Thoughts

With so much to love there’s really no reason that you shouldn’t rush out and test drive the M850i for yourself. You won’t regret the experience. If only to verify that one car can embody so much greatness, it is on the short list of not-to-be-missed driving experiences. It’s hard to argue with a car that is rumored to have as much style and performance as a Bentley for over a hundred thousand dollars less. By all means, check the reviews and features for yourself, but a car like this doesn’t come out every year. BMW knows how to deliver, but even for such a prestigious company, the M850i is a cut above. They went all out, and it shows. All you have to do is look.
