In December 2017, Ares Design announced that they were in the process of designing the Panther ProgrettoUno. The Modena-based coachbuilder also said that they were only planning to release 21 of the cars, which will cost $700,000. Dany Bahar, the CEO of Ares Design and the former CEO of Lotus, has said that nine of them are already reserved for excited buyers. Due to the immediate interest in the cars, Ares Design has now decided to increase their release figures and intend to build a dozen spyders and a dozen coupes over the next five years. They are capping production at 70 vehicles, to maintain a level of exclusivity about the car. It is likely that the spyder variation will cost more, although no figure has yet been released. So, what do we know about the Ares Panther ProgrettoUno?
First, it is based on the design of the Lamborghini Huracan, but it is also a modern interpretation of the DeTomaso Pantera. However, it is possible that no two cars will be exactly the same as Ares Design are offering a range of bespoke options and each car is being custom-built to order. Based on the general shape of the Lamborghini Huracan, Ares Design has reshaped the carbon fiber exterior body with a sloping front fascia and a flowing shape. The result is that the Ares Panther ProgettoUno does not look like the Lamborghini Huracan at all.
The interior of the car is a different matter as the basic cabin structure is almost the same as the Huracan. However, the cockpit area is a bespoke design by Area. There are many customizable aspects of the interior, so some cars will have the feel of a Lamborghini while others will not resemble a Lamborghini at all.
According to Bahar, the performance figures have played less of a role in designing this car than the aesthetics because the aim is to give the owner a pleasurable driving experience. Nonetheless, this does not mean that the car is not fast and powerful. In fact, the reverse is true because the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine is can produce 650-horsepower. It can also go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.1 seconds. So, its performance is far from shoddy.
Other aspects of the mechanical design of the car on which engineers have focused their attention are the transmission and the exhaust. To improve the driving experience, there is a new and retuned exhaust system that gives a better throttle response and a throatier roar. The dual-clutch, seven-speed recalibrated transmission means that this car has better shifting than previous models produced by Ares Design.
Ares Design will not reveal their Panther spyder prototype until later in 2019. One reason for the delay is that the company is focusing its attention on improving the equipment in their factory. This is so they can produce cars that are the same quality as the mainstream car manufacturers. Behar has said that these developments are necessary for them to progress in the motor industry, so they will have to take things slowly this year.
Bahar has also spoken about the customizable aspects of the car and how personalization is an important element of enjoying the Ares Panther ProgettoUnu. Many car manufacturers offer customizable aspects of the car interior, such as a choice of either leather or cloth seats, a choice of interior colors, and options relating to additional features.
However, Ares Design has taken a different approach to the customizable aspects of the car. Instead of giving customers set options from which they can choose, Ares Design has simply said they will strive to meet the desires of the customers. In essence, the company has said that customers can have anything they want in the interiors and Ares Design will deliver. Finally, Bahar has spoken about the customers who have already bought one of these cars. According to Bahar, it is not the billionaires that you would expect buying the cars, but people who are relatively rich and have a connection to DeTomaso. Of course, they must have a decent amount of money in the bank to afford the $700,000 price tag.
