A Closer Look at The Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Automatic

A watch that comes with perks? That is what you get if you happen to be the proud owner of the right Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Automatic. This gorgeous horological wonder, in any incarnation, was born to ride, and everything about it whispers that the race is on. With several styles to choose from the Mille Miglia GTS Automatic is like the stunning cars it is styled after. The auto-inspired beauty comes in some truly unique variations.

Timekeepers

As the name implies, Chopard is officially the timekeeper for the iconic Mille Miglia race through the Italian countryside. Some of the chronographs in the Mille Miglia series are only issued to drivers in the race and each year Chopard issues just a few of these extraordinary timepieces. Though all the Mille Miglia GTS Automatic watches have some common features, the way you obtain yours matters a great deal. Only drivers who manage to win their way into the exclusive Mille Miglia (Thousand Mile) race hold these watches.

Members Only

Just as rare as the drivers’ special edition watches are the new Mille Miglia GTS Automatic For Classic Car Club Manhattan. Far more than a mere watch, it is a symbol of membership. Unlike some symbols, for example, the old school tie or a class ring, transference hath its privileges. Who-so-ever bears this watch is a member of the club with all the rights and perks of membership.

In addition to lifetime transferable membership, holders of these peerless watches get the interchangeable dial which was conceptualized by Mike Prichinello. The founding member showed his deep and abiding love of automotive art and understanding of the Mille Miglia’s unique logo by using the curves of the letters in the logo to inspire these dials. Chopard doesn’t typically design anything with such a ‘punk’ aesthetic, but the unusual auto club watch comes from a modern concept and represents the group well.

Other Means

Of course, for those who don’t have the chops, the classic car or the backing to drive in the Mille Miglia, and don’t live in Manhattan or subscribe to any other club or group who have their own run of the unique automotive timepieces, there are other ways to get your hands on a GTS Automatic. Chopard knows that auto fans can be found everywhere. Anyone who’s of a mind to do so can waltz into Saks Fifth Ave, or another authorized dealer, and pick up a base model of the watch.

Four iterations are offered to the public in most cases. The darkly lovely Speed Black sports a DLC blackened stainless steel. The sleek dusky offering is one of three that sport the instantly recognizable rubber strap. Inspired by Dunlop tire treads of the 1960s. These unique straps are a trademark of the Mille Miglia watches. The silvery Stainless Steel variant is available with the emblematic black band or in a silver band that is more evocative of a truly classic chronograph. Lastly, the 18k Rosegold option is the peacock of the basic GTS Automatic line with its precious metal detail shining like a sunset in the Italian countryside.

Final Thoughts

Some things are meant for each other. Time and racing cannot exist without one another, yet somehow other brands seldom seem to combine the beauty of high speed and high-performance cars with the wonder and grace of an excellent high-end timepiece. When Jacky Ickx laid the groundwork for a partnership between Chopard and Mille Miglia, it must have seemed obvious to him that the two had common ground. As it turns out, he was right. The partnership has produced many a stunning outcome that, like a fine watch, is greater than the sum of its parts even when the parts are already the finest around.
