There is a new watch brand that has entered the market with an affordable watch that has been dubbed the “cool watch” instead of calling their productions luxury accessories. The company began as a crowd-funded startup to get the feet of their business on solid ground and from the time that they began offering their timepieces til now, the new brand has really taken off. They’ve surpassed the early days of their existence and are now considered to be a serious brand and contender in the marketplace of affordable watches. They offer a variety of collections and models across these special groupings. Today we take a closer look at their flagship model the Klokers KLOK-01.
Background of the Klokers KLOK-01
This model is referred to as a slide rule themed time piece and is t. It relays he main player n the collection. This is one of the most unique timepieces that we’ve seen. At first glance it has the appearance of a complicated series of readings in a circular format. The seconds, minutes and hours are read via three rotating discs in concentric orientation. It appears to be a complicated proposition but once you learn how it’s done, there’s nothing difficult about it. This is perhaps the largest part of the attraction to the watch and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but for many, it’s actually quite intriguing.
The case of the Klokers KLOK-01
The case is made of stainless steel both front and back and measures 44 mm in width. The thickness is 11.5 mm which is fairly substantial yet we’re told that it wears fairly comfortably. The crown is placed at the side where the traditional position would be the 3 o’ clock. The case back is also made of stainless steel and features a cut out back with engravings that indicate the movement or at least components thereof are Swiss Made. The case design is lugless which means that it features its own unique proprietary connecting system allowing you to swap the straps when you want to have a different look. You’re not wearing a watch with a strap holding it in place, you’re actually wearing a strap that attaches to a watch and it’s a difficult concept to embrace until you’ve done it.
This watch is referred to a a “steel blue” type with a vibrant blue background for the dial. One of the most unique features of the dial is that it is read from the inner portion to the outsides in this order: seconds, minutes and hours. This takes us in the opposite direction of traditional watch dials. On the upside it forces one to become proficient with breaking old habits and adopting new ones which is a life skill that is highly beneficial. the hands are stationary while the markers are the components which move in another opposite function from the traditional watch dial.
the bracelet is made of Milanese mesh metal. The bracelet that comes with the watch is referred to as their Klink-5, but it’s worth noting that there is also an accessory that allows you to snap it on to the watch to make it a pocket watch style. Because of the unique design of the watch, it’s not one that you can use an aftermarket strap with easily because of the absence of the lugs. The case is water resistant for up to 30 meters. The crystal covering the dial is a polymer non-sapphire type which is crafted with a magnification section built-in. One drawback to the use of the plastic type crystal is that it is not nearly as durable and is more susceptible to clouding, abrasion and breakage.
Pricing and availability
The Klokers KLOK-01is also offered in a smaller version that measures 39mm in width and features just two discs for reading the minutes and hours and it does away with the seconds feature. The watch is available for the cost of 498 in Euros.
The Klokers KLOK-01 is one of the most unique iterations of a timepiece we’ve seen in some time. It’s novel, yet works just the opposite of what most people are used to. It’s based an a totally different principle of timekeeping and this is a part of the value of the brand’s attempt at being different. We must say that they’ve accomplished this feat and tip our hats in congratulations.
