Achieving Your Passion and Defining Success in Entertainment
I’m fortunate enough to have mentors who have accomplished big things both personally and professionally in the Music Industry. Today, I want to highlight two things they all have in common. First, they are passionate about their work and second; they all define success differently. Hence, “Passion is the trigger for Success.”
Find your passion:
You have to be passionate about your work or you will not be happy, it is that simple. You need to be motivated and driven and keep a positive attitude in everything that you do. Passion shows off your enthusiasm and your drive. Passion is an emotion that comes from within you and it does not go unnoticed by the people that surround you. People will see how well you do your job and your attitude towards it and will feed off this positive energy. Everyone says they love music and that’s what they want to work in this industry. However, not everyone is truly passionate about music and that shows.
Do you know what your passion is? Let’s break down what you want and we will find it. Do you want a better job, a raise, and a promotion? The answer is most likely yes, but somewhere along the way you’ve lost your drive and your sense of why you signed up to work in music to begin with. Let’s get it back by going back to the basics and find out what makes you smile every day. Once you know what this is, you will have the motivation you can apply to your passion. Maybe you need to learn new skills or surround yourself with people and things that inspire you. You have the ability to make this change. Find what makes you happy and drives you to get out of bed every morning. Remember this is about putting passion into your work.
Have you ever seen the movie Clockwatchers? This is the last version of yourself you want to be, use your passion to bring energy to your work. Instead of trying to meet deadlines and watch the clock, use your drive to finish your work ahead of time. Stay later and get your work done and use that energy to drive yourself to do more. Passion is an emotion, a state of mind. The first thing you have to do is motivate yourself and your passion will come. And trust me, the money will come later. One of the most exciting parts of being passionate about your work is the thrill and exhilaration you get from seeing something work.
Define Success:
Now that you have mastered how to be passionate about your work, let’s talk about the second most important thing. Let’s find the definition of success for YOU. The definition of success changes for everyone. It varies on your goals, ambition, and your viewpoint. Because success is about the moments that make you feel amazing. When you can achieve all of your goals, and find happiness as defined by you and not by society.
When you are defining what success means to you, remind yourself to have the courage to question what is important to you and what you need to do in order to achieve that. Some people get into the music industry because they see success as getting into parties, fast cars, and the glamorous lifestyle that we see on Instagram. However, that is not necessarily the right thing for everyone. Therefore, your definition of success will be clear when you are doing something that fulfills you. And you have to remind yourself that achieving this bliss will be the only way to find true happiness.
Remember even though your mind has the ability to convince you that something is impossible, you must learn to realign your thinking. Ignore that little voice inside you telling you that you can’t do something. You can find true success in life and achieve all of your dreams by focusing on what truly matters to each and every one of you. As a result, at the end of the day, if you are doing what you love, society’s definition of success won’t matter. Just remember, the money that you need to survive will present itself for your passion.
Regardless of your definition of success, you must remember to BELIEVE in yourself! Being a leader is hard, all the responsibility falls on you and you never really get a ”day off,” you are always on. Which is why it’s important to believe in what you are doing and to love what you are doing (remember that passion we talked about earlier?) or you will not be able to handle the job in order to succeed. Believing in yourself and your passion is the key to making it all worthwhile.
Consequently, what I want you to take away from this is to always live your life to the fullest with the fire in your heart to fuel your passion. A combination of hard work and luck will come together to achieve your ultimate definition of success. The music industry can be a tough place if you don’t have the right attitude, drive, and intentions. Follow my advice and you will LOVE what you do for work!
What’s your passion? How do you define success? I’d love to hear from you.
