Jeffrey Whitford joined Sigma-Aldrich in 2005, where he held a variety of positions, including serving as the company’s first-ever head of global citizenship. Following the acquisition of Sigma-Aldrich by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in 2015, Whitford was named head of global corporate responsibility for MilliporeSigma. In his current role, Whitford is responsible for developing and implementing strategic programs designed to enhance MilliporeSigma’s position as a global leader in green chemistry, product recycling, environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Whitford works to integrate sustainable development concepts into the strategic plans for MilliporeSigma’s key business units. He also directs the company’s largest corporate responsibility initiative, SPARK, in which employees in 36 countries participate in charitable events designed to benefit their local communities. Under Whitford’s leadership, Sigma-Aldrich earned national recognition for its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (2014) and the Carbon Disclosure Project (2012). Sigma-Aldrich also ranked #5 in Newsweek’s Green Rankings (2015); #5 in Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens (2015); #1 in the Materials Sector of the Civic 50 list (2014); and #20 in the Corporate Knights Global 100 at the World Economic Forum at Davos (2014). Whitford earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and strategic communications from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a master’s degree in business administration at Washington University in St. Louis. Whitford has served as a board member of the International Institute in St. Louis and the St. Louis chapter of JDRF.
