Over the course of the last several years, actor Benedict Cumberbatch has made a name for himself in various projects, both in film and television. Of course, people always tend to have an interest in knowing the net worth of celebrities, especially when it’s someone that has achieved his particular level of fame.
A lot of celebrities get paid well for their acting prowess, but there are also plenty of actors that also have clothing lines or something similar that effectively allows them to add to their net worth even when they’re not on screen.
In Benedict Cumberbatch’s case, there are a number of different projects that he has been involved with over the years that have given him an opportunity to amass a net worth of approximately 40 million dollars. The question is, exactly how did he do it?
Breaking It Down
Benedict Cumberbatch’s career can essentially be divided into two sections, his career before Sherlock and of course, from that point forward. He started acting in small television roles in 2002, but he was only getting a few rules here and there, none of them notable enough for anyone to remember for more than a few moments at a time.
As a matter of fact, it took two full years of him hustling to get his hands on every acting job that he could possibly find before anything of substance came through. These smaller jobs did contribute to his net worth, but they didn’t contribute to it a lot. As is the case with a lot of acting jobs for individuals who are just starting out, the jobs were often few and far between.
Furthermore, the ones that did come through didn’t have a tendency to pay more than a few hundred dollars at a time. While every little bit does contribute to a person’s overall net worth, it wasn’t until he got a couple of more notable roles that people actually started paying attention to him. It also wasn’t until then that any appreciable amount of money started rolling in.
The Roles That Changed Everything
It wasn’t until Cumberbatch played in the 2007 film Atonement that people started to take notice of him. In fact, he did such good work in that film, playing a deeply disturbed individual who was also a genius, that the producers responsible for the television show Sherlock took note of his work.
Ultimately, they decided that he would be a perfect fit as the lead character. By the time it was all said and done, they offered him the role of a lifetime, one that would literally propel his career to the next level. By the time that Sherlock was finished airing, he had so many offers for various roles coming in that it became humanly impossible to even consider accepting them all.
For the first time in his professional life, he was in a position where he could choose the type of work that he wanted to do based on what appealed to him most on a creative level as opposed to simply snatching up every job that became available as a means of trying to stay afloat financially.
Even casual fans know that one of those jobs has included playing the recurrent role of Doctor Strange in the MCU, something that he has become hugely famous for. In fact, many people would arguably say that this particular role has even eclipsed the fame that came his way for playing Sherlock.
While not every person is aware of his role as Sherlock, it seems that anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the last several years knows exactly who Doctor Strange is.
He Works All The Time
In addition to playing in roles that are extremely popular, thus generating a large amount of income, Cumberbatch also gets a lot of his money from working all the time. In fact, he starred in no less than four separate movies in 2013, a feat that very few actors can claim to have done themselves.
When you consider the fact that it typically takes at least three months to film a movie, it is conceivable to assume that he worked around the clock without taking a break for an entire year. That’s asking a lot of any individual, but it’s something that he has a tendency to do on a routine basis.
In addition to generating a great deal of on-screen work, he can often be found performing on stage. In fact, he has repeatedly stated that he loves performing on a live stage even more than he enjoys performing on camera. If that’s not enough to keep a person busy, he also does a lot of voiceover work.
More often than not, he will go directly from filming a movie to doing a production run of a play, only to fit his voice over work into his already tight schedule. It’s not something that a lot of people could do. As a matter of fact, it’s not something that a lot of people would even want to do. That said, he seems to thrive on it.
The man stays busy
At the end of the day, Cumberbatch seems to genuinely enjoy staying busy. Some people don’t like to have a lot of downtime in their schedule, and he seems to thrive on having something to do almost all the time.
When he’s not doing one of the aforementioned things, he’s serving as a narrator for any number of shows that are on either the Discovery Channel or on National Geographic. It’s something that he’s been doing for quite some time now. Moreover, it appears that he plans to continue doing it well into the future.
All of this comes together to get to the 40 million dollar net worth that he has been reported to have. Like anyone else, he works hard and is able to show the reward for his hard work as a millionaire.
