There is a new technology that could help to fight the battle against the Covid-19 virus. Curran Biotech has developed a new and innovative capture coating that converts regular air filters into virus battling tools that filter the air we breathe. This has tremendous implications for large public gathering areas, restaurants, airlines, and other businesses, as well as individual households.

Recent concerns over the safety of the air that is filtered through the vents of airlines, restaurants, and other public places ha prompted the development of a new type of nano-coating that has a huge impact on air filtration. Curran Biotech has developed this new tool that improves the filtration of everyday filters in a specialized coating that bonds to filter fibers with greater hydrophobic properties to prevent droplets that carry viruses from traveling through the fibers of the filters, according to Curran Biotech’s official website.

What is capture coating?

Capture coating is a new type of coating that is sprayed onto the filter of an HVAC system. It is a substance that is a highly water-repellent, non-leaching, and flexible spray coating that creates a barrier that stops particles as small as respiratory droplets from getting through air filtration systems. This new technology is effective in preventing viral transmissions for Covid-19 and other airborne illnesses, according to Techcrunch. The technology was developed by Curran Biotech, founded by University of Houston physics professor Shay Curran. He explained that capture coating is a molecularly complex compound that is simple to use by spraying onto HVAC system filters.

Capture coating could be a game-changer

The current problem with HVAC air filtration is that although it does help to prevent some transmission of potentially virus-laden respiratory droplets, some still get through. There weren’t any cost-effective solutions available to solve the problem. Using outside air was one consideration for cutting risks, but it was not an energy-efficient solution. There were also risks for cross-contamination from using outside air. Indoor air ventilation is a concern as the country begins to slowly reopen. With the pandemic numbers currently going in the right direction with lower daily case counts, people receiving the vaccines, masking up, and social distancing, we’re making headway, but the dangers are still lurking around every corner. Businesses opening up and allowing more people inside creates the threat of new outbreaks, particularly with new strains and variants of the virus emerging. This new treatment to eliminate the possibility of the virus being spread through air filtration systems could be a game-changer.

Can capture coating be the solution we’re looking for?

Part of the problem with opening up America to restore jobs and a more normalized way of life has been the threat of spreading the virus with people gathering in indoor public places. Movie theaters, bowling alleys, bars, restaurants, and other businesses have either closed or limited their capacity for customers. This has taken a toll on many companies forcing them to close their forever. Can capture coating provide a solution to the problem that is preventing America from fully opening? Vincent Caprio, the executive director of the NanoBusiness Commercialization Association believes that it could be. He sees this as a significant accelerant to opening up the country if businesses adopt the use of this new technology. Curran is a highly credentialed fellow of the National Academy of Inventors as well as adjunct faculty at the Focus Institute at the Technical University of Dublin and associate director of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute at the University of Houston, according to Eurekalert.

Are the filters already in use?

This is a new technology but it’s already gone past the lab phase of development and is currently being commercialized and marketed. It is currently being used in a public building in New York City. Curran’s new technology primarily focuses on providing this new hydrophobic coating for fabrics and other products. There is another company called Integricote that manufactures coating for wood, masonry, and concrete at the University of Houston’s labs.

Capture coating for masks

Curran also developed a coating for masks. This was the original intention for the new nano-coating technology. It is a solution for the issue of masks inhibiting but not preventing the spread of the virus. While masks cut the risks of people wearing them transmitting the virus, they are not enough by themselves to eliminate the risk of becoming infected from particles and droplets that are airborne. Capture coating does not interfere with airflow, so it is safe to spray on masks. People wearing them can still breathe easily, but it does capture the respiratory droplets responsible for transmitting the virus. The coating is an innovation that can make those wearing the masks safer in public places as well as in the workplace, or when caring for family members afflicted with the virus. This has a tremendous implication for enhancing the safety of health care workers, grocery clerks, restaurant staff, and anyone who works with the general public.

Additional benefits of capture coating

Although Covid-19 is the prime concern at this point, there are other benefits associated with the new capture coating technology. When flu season rolls around tens of thousands are sickened by breakouts throughout the nation. Although not quite as insidious, it is a cause of death and illness in the nation. The capture coating of air filtration systems and masks has the potential for making all indoor gathering places safer for everyone. It has the potential to stop the spread of common illness that is also considered to be infectious diseases, as well as for Covid-19. We may be turning a corner in the prevention of infectious diseases in America and throughout the world. The implications for enhancing public health and safety are exciting and they give us more hope of returning to a more normal state of living where business can once again thrive in a healthier population and a more stable economy.
