10 Great Credit Cards for Making Gas Purchases

Chase Freedom

There are only a few things that you can consider a true necessity in life. There’s food, shelter, and clothing. Perhaps, there’s one more thing that should be added to the list: gasoline. These days, it’s hard to get places without a vehicle; and in order to keep a vehicle going, you need gasoline. It’s pretty simple. It’s also the reason why we still pay for gas no matter how high the price tag gets. Fortunately, there are credit cards out there that are designed to reward you for your gas purchases. In no particular order, the following credit cards offer you the best returns for your spending on gasoline.

1. Discover It Cash Back

Discover is a solid credit card brand. You’ll need to have excellent to good credit in order to get approval for the Discover It credit card. Once you have it, you’ll be grateful you applied for it. This card has no annual fee, and it offers 5% quarterly cash back at gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, and more. On top of that, you’ll also earn 1% cash back on all your other purchases. However, the best part is the intro offer. At the end of your first year, Discover will match your entire cash back amount—automatically and no limit.

2. Citi Rewards+ Card

This Citi credit card offers something unique. Citi Rewards+ will round up to the nearest 10 whatever points you accumulate, and that’s for every single purchase you make. You’ll also get 15,000 bonus points after the first $1,000 you spend, but you have to spend that amount within the first three months. A huge chunk of that could easily be from gas purchases. And that’s a good thing also because this credit card will earn you Thank You points 2X at gas stations. The cap on that is $6,000 per year, but you still earn 1X points after that.

3. Journey Student Rewards from Capital One

Even students have to pay for gas too, and this credit card from Capital One keeps students in mind. You’ll only need to have fair to average credit in order to qualify for this credit card. The rewards are decent and useful enough for someone who’s still a student. This card offers 1X cash back on all purchases, but it also rewards you for using your credit card right. If you pay your credit card dues on time every month, you can boost your cash back up to 1.25%.

4. Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

Here’s another offering from Capital One for those looking that qualifies for a better card because of good credit rating. The Quicksilver Cash Reward card offers decent 1.5% cash back on every single purchase you make every single day. That means that you get that much return on all your gas purchases also. Since there are no rotating categories associated with this card, you can stack up and save your cash back to be used whenever you want or need them.

5. Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

It’s true that American Express offers some of the best credit card rewards out there, and the Blue Cash Preferred card is no exception. When it comes to gas buying reward, this card is the best. In fact, this credit card offers 3% cash back on all gas purchases—without any caps or restrictions whatsoever. That’s more than we’ve heard of from any credit cards. In addition, you also get an additional 6% on other types of purchases.

6. Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi

Most drivers know that some of the best prices on gas are available only at Costco gas stations. It just so happens that Costco has a special card from Citi: the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. First off, you can get 4% cash back on the first $7,000 you spend on gas every year. That’s $280 cash back just right there. But you have to understand that it doesn’t only apply to Costco gas stations. You can get gas anywhere you like and still get the cash back.

7. Wells Fargo Propel American Express Card

This credit card from Wells Fargo and American Express offers competitive 3% cash back on all gas purchases as well. As a matter of fact, you also get 3% cash back on other purchases as well. There are no limits to this, and so this card makes a lot of sense for those who spend a lot of money on gas. As another bonus, this card has absolutely zero annual fees.

8. Chase Freedom

Let’s talk about the positives first. This card has no annual fee. Also, this card will let you earn an incredible 5% cash back from your gas purchases. That percentage is virtually unheard of. However, you only get the gas category at least one quarter each year—this card has rotating categories. We have seen the gas category appear in two quarters in 2018, so there’s hope. Just make sure you keep track of the bonus categories if you’re going to opt for the Chase Freedom credit card.

9. Hilton Honors Amex Ascend Card

This credit card makes sense for people who travel frequently for business. It makes sense for people that are constantly staying in hotels or those who commute long distances by car. It combines the best of both worlds. You should know that the Hilton Honors Amex Ascend Card will give you 6X the points for your gas purchases. All gas purchases will also give you 6 Hilton Honors points for every $1 you spend.

10. Sunoco Rewards Credit Card

If you don’t normally get gas from Sunoco, you might want to start after you get approved for the Sunoco Rewards Credit Card. The first benefit you’ll ever get is a discounted gas rate. If you use your Sunoco credit card at the pump, you’ll get unlimited $0.05 discount per gallon. There are also no annual fees, and you can get unlimited extra cards for your family members.
