Five Places You Have To Visit When Vacationing on Dauphin Island, AL

Resting directly off the coast of Alabama, you can discover Dauphin Island. Both affordable and safe, this vacation spot is truly a hidden gem. Due to the location, the island has warm weather all year round. Cozy cafes, local restaurants, and a quaint downtown add to the island’s character. Beaches filled with stunning, white sand and numerous opportunities to immerse yourself in nature are just the beginning of the offerings the island has.

Audubon Bird Sanctuary

The astonishing bird sanctuary in Dauphin Island features 164 acres of breathtaking scenery and lengthy paths. With walking trails that extend for miles, you can observe both the local wildlife and the plants native to the island. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary is an absolute must on your Dauphin Island bucket list.

West End Public Beach

A sprawling beach with white sand and an incredible view of the ocean doesn’t do the West End Public Beach justice. You are located on a strip of land jutting off the end of the island. Because of this, you are surrounded by water. This is an excellent place to bring a family for the day, sightsee, enjoy nature or watch the sunset.

Indian Shell Mound Park

Indian Shell Mound Park dates back to the Mississippian Period (AD 1100 – 1550). During this time period, Native Americans utilized the shell mounds for fishing and roasting oysters. This historic site provides hiking and history all in one. Because of the tree cover and vines, you’ll feel like you’re in a jungle. With all the park has to offer, you can easily spend a full day looking around.

Fort Morgan

Because it’s a short ferry ride away from Dauphin Island, many overlook Fort Morgan when planning their trip. Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort, constructed in between 1819 and 1833. This historic site was active throughout World War I and World War II, and the Spanish American War. It is truly a piece of our history. Due to the unique scenery and coastal location, Fort Morgan truly has something to offer to everyone.

Islander’s Restaurant

Last but definitely not least, Islander’s Restaurant is a low-key and charming place to grab a drink or bring your family. Featuring seafood and American cuisine, Islander’s Restaurant has something on the menu to cater to everyone in the family. Since it’s important to take advantage of the warm weather, Islander’s offers outdoor seating on a cozy deck. String lights are turned on as the sun sets. Overall, Islander’s makes for an unforgettable dining experience.

It’s safe to say that Dauphin Island is one of the best-kept vacation secrets. Anyone who enjoys spending time in nature has an interest in history or is looking for beach-side vacation will love this location and all it has to offer.
