How Has Meetup Changed Since the WeWork Acquisition?

WeWork purchased MeetUp for $200 million in November 2017 and many people considered this to be a wise move. The two companies offered similar services and complimented each other well. WeWork estimated that over 100,000 MeetUp members were already using locations that were already owned by the company. At the time of the purchase MeetUp had over 35 million members and so there was obviously a lot of potential for both companies to grow together as they began to share spaces. The purchase did mean that several aspects of MeetUp would change as WeWork naturally wanted it to provide them with some benefits that it did not have before. Now that some time has passed since the acquisition it has become clearer what these changes are and several of these are discussed in more detail below.

MeetUp Started To Focus More On Business Users

Before the acquisition MeetUp was predominately used by individuals who were looking to connect with people that had similar interests to them. The site connected people that wanted to learn to cook or train for a marathon. While this is still an important part of what the site does it has also started to focus on business users. Remote working is now something that is possible for many more people than it has been in the past due to advances in technology. However, working from home can be very lonely and this is the reason that shared working spaces have become so popular in recent years. Using MeetUp allows people to connect with others that are running similar businesses to them and may benefit from sharing ideas and equipment. This is now much easier to arrange now that MeetUp and WeWork are the same company.

The Branding For Both Companies Was Updated

The branding for MeetUp changed slightly so that it was more obvious that this company was now owned by WeWork. This was an important move as it let users of both sites know that they were now connected. It also went a long way to showing users how they could make the most of the services that were offered by both companies. Even though the branding changed customers were still able to access the services that were offered by both companies in the same way as they did before.

MeetUp Started To Provide Leads For WeWork

WeWork has plenty of locations where meeting can be held and organizers from MeetUp can book these locations directly from the website. WeWork meeting places have a lot of facilities that business users can use and these started to be advertised on the MeetUp site. This meant that MeetUp is now much more useful to business users than it was before. However, it still retains all of the same features that made it so popular with individuals before the acquisition took place.

MeetUp Users Could Use WeWork Spaces For Free

The traditional way that people would meet before WeWork acquired MeetUp was in public places such as coffee shops or restaurants. The main reason for this is that you do not have to pay to get in. You may have to buy a drink or something to eat but this would not have necessarily cost a lot and you can make your purchase last a while until all your work has been done. WeWork started to offer some of their spaces for free just so that they could get people through the door. Once more people were using these spaces then they could offer further services which were charged for. Offering spaces for free let people see what WeWork actually has to offer. They would more likely to pay for this when they have seen for themselves what the benefits of working there would be.

Not all of these changes were seen straightaway as WeWork purchased a number of other companies at the same time and they wanted to put their own stamp on these companies as well. They also have not really bought in any major sweeping changes because MeetUp worked well with what it offered before it was bought out by WeWork. The changes that have been made have been introduced to make the two different companies work well together.
