The SUV market has been booming for the past decade. While the first models were a little expensive, the competition is driving the cost for brand spanking new Sport Utility Vehicles lower than ever in some cases. The reason for the popularity of this platform is because of families both large and small benefit from the roominess of these cars. They’re great for soccer moms or families who like to take it off the road every now and then. Although some of the least expensive SUVs fall short in options and creature comforts, compared to the higher-priced versions, they’re more affordable. Plus you will generally have the ability to pick and choose which options you’d like to add to your order if you want to customize your package. If you’re in the market for a new SUV, here are the top 10 to watch out for in 2020.
10. 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe – $25,900
The Santa Fe is one of the most impressive SUVs in its design and its equipment. Besides being an attractive vehicle, it comes packed with a ton of safety features and a rocking infotainment system. It’s fun to drive on windy roads because of the taut suspension that makes it ideal for taking the curves. The base engine isn’t that powerful and the fuel economy of 22-25 mpg isn’t anything spectacular, but for the price, it’s a great little SUV.
9. Mitsubishi Outlander – $25,890
The new Mitsubishi Outlander will start out with a base price of $25,890 without the bells and whistles that a few more grand could buy. The best thing about this SUV is the fact that it’s spacious and it comes with some great tech features. You can also add on all-terrain capability if you’re willing to spend a little more. The build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but the gas mileage is average at 22-27 mpg combined.
8. 2020 Dodge Journey – $24,995
The newest Dodge Journey is going to be priced at around $25,000 if you start with the base model. It will be just a few thousand above the 2019 model. Don’t expect a lot of changes to the new edition, although there will be some updates. This affordable SUV will come with its standard three rows of seating and it’s designed for passenger comfort plus cargo space. On the downside, though, the combined mpg rating is just 19-21 combined which isn’t great fuel efficiency.
7. 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross – $24,690
The Mitsubishi Eclipse has been around since the 1990s, and the base model for 2020 will come in under $25,000. While this is a reasonable price tag for an SUV that has so much to offer, if you decide to add some of the premium options, the price can go up rather quickly. It’s fun to drive with above-average performance, responsiveness and plenty of cargo space.
6. 2020 Hyundai Tucson – $24,245
The Hyundai Tucson hasn’t been redesigned in a while so the 2020 edition is going to be similar to the 2019 model, with the exception of just a few minor updates. The low price makes this average performing SUV a great deal for 2020 if you’re in the market for a new compact-sized SUV.
5. 2020 Honda HR-V
The HR-V was introduced in 2016. It’s known for its versatility adn the cargo area is spacious as well as flexible if you need to sacrifice passenger space for cargo area. The main drawback is that the engine is not a high performer and it’s a bit on the noisy side, but it’s an economical vehicle that gets between 28-30 combined mpg.
4. 2020 Hyundai Kona – $21,035
The new Kona is priced a couple thousand more than the cheapest SUV but it’s still among the most affordable. The Kona comes with an all-wheel-drive option if you want to spend a little more. You can also boost the engine power for more horsepower in an upgraded model, but the standard vehicle without all the bells and whistles will only let you back a little more than $21,000
3. 2020 Hyundai Kona – $20,100
The Hyundai Kona made its debut in 2018. While it isn’t the top-ranked SUV coming out for 2020, it is going to be relatively inexpensive with a starting price of $20,100. The design team focused its efforts on practicality and comfort. The Kona is an extra small-sized SUV. You can expect to get between 27- 30 mpg making it fairly fuel-efficient.
2. 2020 Nissan Kicks – $19,685
The New Kicks isn’t the top of the line when it comes to performance, comfort or fuel efficiency, but it is the least expensive SUV coming out for 2020. Although it’s going to be priced just under $20,000, it’s a really good car. There isn’t an all-wheel-drive option, but the 125 hp engine does the job and gets you from one place to another with decent performance, interior comfort and plenty of standard equipment. Of course, it is upgradable if you want to pay a little more.
1. 2020 Kia Soul – $18,485
This crossover SUV offers plenty of space and more than some other crossover SUVs. It’s been redesigned for 2020 and although it doesn’t come with an all-wheel-drive option, the performance is claimed to be high as well as a ton of equipment options coming standard. The mpg is between 27-30 combined highway and city. It’s the least expensive SUV for 2020 and for the price, it really is a great little car.
