How Local Businesses Have Been Helping

Many local business owners understand that it is their civic duty to help their fellow residents who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey’s wrath. In total, local and national businesses have pledged to donate over $157 million in goods, services and cash to relief efforts. Here are ways in which some local businesses are helping out.

1. Provide housing for first responders. Academy Sports + Outdoors is donating its headquarters as a command center for first responders, military operations and medical crews. In addition to the donated office space, the company has provided first responders with access to the company gym and shower facility. They have donated approximately $1.5 million dollars in equipment and supplies to the relief effort.

2. Use a furniture showroom as a shelter for displaced residents. Gallery Furniture is one of Houston’s most respected furniture stores. The owner of this furniture empire made national news when he opened up his furniture stores to residents in need of shelter during the turbulent days of Hurricane Harvey. Displaced Texas residents were able to recover in comfort with 3 meals a day courtesy of Gallery Furniture.

3. Outreach from local businesses in Texas. It might be true that giant corporations have access to millions of dollars in funding, but local businesses have the potential to make an impact with small amounts of cash and heartfelt effort. Throughout the state, local businesses have been coming together to sponsor relief efforts for Texas residents. Some businesses have donated a percentage of their revenues to Hurricane Harvey relief. Health and wellness companies have partnered with local kennels to help pets who have been affected by the storm.

Local businesses understand that Hurricane Harvey relief does not solely rest on the shoulders of Congress, FEMA or the President of the United States. By their actions, they have shown that they have a responsibility to rebuild their local communities.
