10 Things You Didn’t Know About NRG Energy CEO Mauricio Gutierrez

Mauricio Gutierrez is the CEO as well as the president of the NRG company. He’s a seasoned professional business man who has a tough job that requires expertise and knowledge of the energy industry as well as insights into protecting the environment while attending to the health of the company, simultaneously. We wanted to know more about the man who is at the helm of NRG, so we checked into his history and career to find out more. Here are 10 things we discovered about Mauricio Gutierrez that you probably didn’t know.

1. Mr. Gutierrez has been instrumental in building the NRG company

When Mauricio joined NRG in 2004, there was a lot of work to do. It was in need of attention from someone who knew how to transform it into a thriving business and that is precisely what he has done. He helped to build NRG from a regional wholesale company into the Fortune 500, national, diversified energy company that it is today.

2. He didn’t start at the top

Mr Gutierrez joined NRG and quickly moved up in the ranks.  In 2010 he became Chief Operating Officer. It was during this time that he led the engineering and construction activities of the company as well as the re-powering of important projects related to new generation operations. He proved the value of his leadership at this time and when the position became available, he was the natural choice to become NRG’s new CEO.

3. His job is multifaceted

Mauricio Gutierrez is a leader who multi-tasks. He has the ability to look at the total picture and identify areas which are in need of improvement and growth. He took on the responsibility of the generation of thermal operations fleets and made sure that they were operational at the highest levels of environmental sustainability, performance and safety. H led the company’s construction and engineering activities as well and oversaw the commodities trading even through the energy markets were gaining in volatility. He was instrumental in maximizing the financial performance of NRG and he did all of these things at the same time.

4. He has a grip on international relations

Mr. Gutierrez started out his career in a consultation position for DTP Consultores, a Mexico based company. He gained experience working on a variety of projects in Mexico, dealing with infrastructure and energy. He began his professional career within the energy industry in Mexico and then moved into positions in the United States.

5. He worked for Dynegy

Gutierrez joined the management program at Dynegy serving in a variety of different positions. He was the Management Director for the Texas and Southeast regions of the company as well as Asset Manager at NRG, and a Trader for East Power.

6. His advice is highly respected

Mauricio has years of experience and has achieved a level of expertise in his field that make others want to seek out his advice. He has served on several different boards to share his knowledge in the United States and in Mexico. He sat on several boards as a member including the Mexican National Chamber of Consulting Firms as well as the Power Supply Association of the United States.

7. He has an international education

Mr. Gutierrez attended the Universidad Panamericana and studied in their engineering program. He received his bachelors degree in this discipline. After completing his four year engineering degree, he continued on with his education. He earned a masters degree from the Colorado School of Mines in mineral economics and another masters from the French Petroleum Institute in petroleum economics.

8. Mr. Gutierrez is very well compensated at NRG

The latest figures that we were able to get show that Mr. Gutierrez has earned a generous compensation package from NRG. As of the end of the 2017 fiscal year, his earnings were $1,225,962 in salary. Other compensation in the form of stock options and other kinds of compensation came to a total of $9,049,662.

9. He’s held multiple directorships

Mr. Gutierrez has served on multiple boards throughout his career. Just to name a few of them, he served as director at GenOn Energy, Inc. since 2016 as well as of NRG Engergy, Inc., since 2012. He was also chairman of the board of NRG Yield, Inc.

10. He’s been the CEO of NRG for just 4 years

In the short time that Mauricio Gutierrez has been the CEO of NRG, he’s made a lot of positive changes. He was appointed to the position in December of 2015 and continues to lead the company at the present. He’s a dynamic leader who is an asset to his employer and his career is worthy of discussion.
