Scott Heiferman is known for his efforts as a community organizer as well as an internet entrepreneur and businessman. He has amassed a fortune in his career and serves as an inspiration for entrepreneurs who are just starting out and looking for guidance. Scott is an interesting leader in the business world and there is a lot that we can learn from him. We were interested in knowing more about his early life and how he came to achieve such a high level of success. 1. His Birthday

Scott Heiferman was born in Homewood, Illinois in 1972. This makes him 47 years old as of 2019. He was raised in Homewood in a family of five children. He attended the Homewood-Flossmoor High School and successfully graduated.

2. He had to earn the money for college

Scott wanted to go to college after high school but he didn’t have enough money to pay for the tuition. While some would become discouraged and see this as an insurmountable obstacle, that wasn’t the view that he took of the situation. Scott came up with a solution to the problem. He got a job selling coupon books for a town that was located near his hometown, and he earned enough from this endeavor to pay for his entire first year of college.

3. Scott went to college

In fulfillment of his dream to continue his education, Heiferman enrolled in courses at the University of Iowa. He entered the school studying in teh engineering program. As he progressed in his courses, he decided that he wanted to go into a different profession so he changed his major to business. He fulfilled all the requirements and earned his degree in business in 1994.

4. He landed a job right out of college

As soon as he was out of college, Scott set out to find a job. His first job was at the Sony corporation in Montvale, New Jersey. He was put in the position of Interactive Marketing Frontiersman. He stayed in the position from 1994 through 1995. While he was at Sony he was instrumental in assisting the company in the development of the very first corporate website for the business. When he decided that it was time for him to strike out on his own and put his entrepreneurship skills to the test.

5. Scott moved to New York City and founded his own business

Heiferman was motivated to establish a business of his own. His first company was an online ad agency. He named it i-traffic. The company was dedicated to online media. It didn’t take long before his new venture grew into a business that employed 100 workers. After building the company up from scratch, he sold it to Agency.com in 1999 after just 5 years in business for the tidy sum of $15 million. The very first company that he built had just made him a very rich man. He had sold the business just prior to the decline of the dot-com bubble. He accepted a position for Agency.com through 2000.

6. He went to work at McDonald’s

After Scott left Agency.com he went to work for McDonald’s. He stayed with the fast-food company from 2000 through 2001. This job gave him yet a richer perspective on the business world.

7. He was impacted by the September 11 attacks

When the crisis happened in the 911 attacks, Mr. Heiferman was living just a couple of miles from the Twin Towers. This was a catastrophic event that would forever change his life. For the first time, he and many of his neighbors met each other as they gathered on the roof of the building he was living in. This was an experience that made him consider the way that people within communities interact wtih one another. He read a book about creating connections among strangers and how the American culture is losing its sense of community. This brought about a period of deep thought and it inspired him to start yet another organization. He cofounded Meetup in 2002, along with five others who shared similar interests. The organization hired 10 employees and the company set about to organize and connect members of the community.

8. He established another successful business

In 2002, right around the time that he founded MeetUp, Mr. Heiferman began a new business that he named Fotolog. This company was a photo-sharing service. Once again, he built the business up and then five years later he sold it. This time the company went for $90 million.

9. Scott also founded WeWork

The WeWork company is another business that Scott Heiferman established with his partner. He also served as the Chairman of the company and the CEO for a period of time. The company was based in New York, New York. He became the CEO from 2017 and still serves in that capacity and as of October of 2018, he has served as the Chairman. WeWork is a company that filed for its IPO status to become a publicly-traded company. Unfortunately, with the market volatility, the timing for the IPO was off and the results were disastrous. The valuation of the company dropped from $47 billion all the way down to $10 billion. This was a devastating move that happened at a time when some companies did well at their initial public offering and others went the way of WeWork. It was a gamble for just about every company that chose to go public and there were several that watched these events go down and then withdrew their filing, choosing to delay until there was a better confidence level in teh stability of the market.

10. He serves on the PBC Board

Mr. Heiferman is an expert when it comes to business and his advice is highly desired by major companies. He joined the Board of the PBC company in 2015 as a member of the New York, New York location. He’s been on the board for a total of 4 years and is still serving in an advisory capacity. The Purpose builds movements and develops new power models for addressing some of the biggest problems in the world. Mr. Heiferman is an expert community organizer.

11. He is a Henry Crown Fellow

Scott Heiferman is a Henry Crown Fellow of the non-profit organization management entity The Aspen Institute, located in Washington, District of Columbia. The Henry Crown Fellowship program was started in 1997. It was created for the purpose of the development of the next generation of leaders who are community-spirited, and it aims to provide them with the required tools to rise up and address the 21st century’s business leadership challenges. This appointment is by nomination and Mr. Heriferman was appointed in 2011 and has been a Henry Crown Fellow for 8 years.

12. He serves on the Open Learning Exchange board

Scott became a member of the Open Learning Exchange Board of Directors in 2017 and currently serves on the board. This is an organization that enables people to build connections, meaning, and power together in disrupted and impoverished communities. This is yet one more organization that he supports actively for the purpose of bringing communities together in a meaningful and productive way.

13. He serves as The New School Advisor

The New School is located in New York, New York. It is a university for people who are activists from a scholarly perspective and for those who are brave and defy convention in their design. The institution is a century old. He joined as an advisor in 2019.

14. He is a humble man

Scott Heiferman is about making effective changes for the better for people throughout the world. He’s a mover and a shaker but he is also a humble man. He’s incredibly rich from a financial perspective, but this isn’t what makes him tick. His greatest passions are accomplishing good things for people. He’s put in a lot of hard work to learn about life and the people who live in the communities around him and beyond. When he went to work for the fast-food chain McDonald’s it wasn’t as an executive. He worked as a crew member which means he put in some hard labor for little pay. He didn’t need the money but he did desire to have the experience. He spent a full year at the job doing manual labor right after he sold a company for $15 million. This tells you what kind of person he is. One with integrity and dedication.

15. He has a patent

It’s not surprising that Scott Heiferman has a patent. He’s brilliant in so many aspects of business that it’s surprising that he only has one. He obtained a patent for his Web-based interactive meeting facility with revenue generation through sponsorship. The patent was issued on August 25, 2015.

16. Meetup Inc is a multi-faceted company

Heiferman’s Meetup Inc company is an online community but it has a lot to offer that many people are not aware of. Some of the things include sports, fitness, writing, fashion, beauty, social events, learning, health, and wellness. The services provided by Meetup are for clients within the United States. The company has not expanded internationally.

17. He has made the world a better place

Scott Heiferman went deep within himself after the events of 911. An emotional encounter on a rooftop caused him to weigh within his own mind what he considered to be important in this life. It was at this point that he saw the need for community organization and how far-reaching the efforts could be. Since that time he has been active in assisting a variety of organizations in promoting these efforts, in addition to establishing his own organizations. Because of his efforts, the world is a better place.

18. Scott Heiferman is a hard worker

Scott wouldn’t need to work a day in his life with all of the wealth that he has at his disposal. He isn’t working for the financial rewards. He’s already done that. He’s working because he has a passion and a dedication to seeing important projects through. He’s one of those rare individuals who does a lot more than just talking about big problems. He wades directly into the heart of the matter and does what he can to bring people together in ways that empower them and bring about changes for the better for the people within communities in need of help.

19. He’s just getting started

We’ve already seen a lot from Scott Heiferman. He’s accomplished a great deal of good with his involvement in community organizing efforts. Sure, he’s made millions but he’s also given of himself to try to be a part of the solution to some of the biggest problems on the face of the earth. Scott is still a young man with a brilliant mind and a heart for taking action. It is our belief that he’s just getting started and that we’re going to see a lot more from him.

From the time he was a new high school graduate to the present, we’ve seen a fighting spirit in Scott Heiferman. When he didn’t have the money to go to college he went out and earned it the good old fashioned way. He went door to door selling coupon books. He doesn’t shrink back when there is a big problem. Instead, he uses his brain and figures out how to solve it. He does so with an “I can” attitude. Instead of taking a defeatist attitude he tackles the obstacles head-on. We can all learn a lot from the example that he has set.
