Are you dreaming about leaving your hectic life and going on a vacation? The time away can make all the difference, not to mention that the world is your oyster! You can go anywhere you wish, experience the culture, take new adventures, and create once in a lifetime memories for the years to come. If this all sounds like a dream come true, then it sounds like it is about time to start planning. If you are ready to get out and about, you may want to set your sights toward Sukhothai. This city in Thailand is filled with wonder, and makes the perfect destination for all. In this article, we are going to count down the top ten things to do in Sukhothai. Let’s see what this city has in store!

1. Wat Mahathat

When talking about taking a vacation to the city of Sukhothai, one of the first sites that you will want to visit will be that of Wat Mahathat. What is known as the most popular and visited temple in the area, Wat Mahathat is often referred to as the ‘Temple of the Great Relic. The best time to visit this particular ancient site would be either during the earlier portion of the day, or later in the evening. This way, you can avoid the majority of the larger, tourist driven crowds.

2. Visit The Museums

For some, museums seem to be boring and overrated. However, when visiting Sukhothai, one of the best things that you can do is visit some of the museums the city has to offer. Both the Sangkhalok Museum and the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum allow you to fully understand in better detail all of the wonder that you experience at the many temples and ancient sites that are spread throughout the land. The best time to take these museums in would be during the afternoon, when the majority of crowds will be making their way to the ancient grounds.

3. Wat Chang Lom

We will be looking into many different and wondrous ancient ruins to visit in this list, but none compare to the site of Wat Chang Lom. The word ‘Chang’ in the Thai language actually means ‘Elephant’, and for the animal lovers in your life, this will be an amazing site. Wat Chang Lom is a temple that is surrounded by 32 different elephant statues that are at attention in a circle on the site. There is nothing that will quite compare to these amazing structures.

4. Si Satchanalai

For this next tourist destination in the Sukhothai Kingdom, you will want to plan on spending the entire day here. The Si Satchanalai Historical Park can be found around an hour away from the city, but these ancient ruins are definitely worth the trip. Also known as the ruins of the ‘City of Good People’, the park itself is filled with various temples, ruins, and other statuesque discoveries that will help you understand the culture even better.

5. Wat Sa Si

If you are a lover of catching the most gorgeous of sunsets when you are out and about, you will definitely want to plan on making a trip to Wat Sa Si one of the nights during your stay. This ancient ruin site, when compared to others in the area, is quite small; However, what it lacks in overall size is nothing when you take in the view. The temple is surrounded by water, and can provide some of the most breathtaking views, especially during sunset.

6. Local Markets

This is, of course, one of the best things that you can do when wanting to experience a new culture. By visiting the markets first hand, you get a closer look at the lifestyle of the local people without having all of the tour guide feel. The majority of the vendors in these markets will be selling produce and other products that are meant to be brought home and cooked, but if you really look, you should be able to find some vendors that are also sharing some local cuisine and merchandise to try.

7. Wat Si Chum

Like we said before, the of the sites and experiences to have in Sukhothai come from the numerous ancient ruin sites that are within the city. The beauty is that each sacred ground has something special and unique that makes it one of a kind. This brings us to Wat Si Chum. This ancient ground is known for having its own bit of magic within the scenery, as well as the fifty foot tall, gold covered Buddha that stands within the temple. Just as with the vast majority of these other areas, the best time to experience the magic and beauty is earlier in the day, allowing you a chance to get away from the crowds.

8. The Thuriang Kilns

Unlike some of the other sites that we have mentioned, this holds a bit of a different treasure. Located just a bit further north of the city of Sukhothai are the Thuriang Kilns, ancient ceramic pottery and architecture that was discovered back at the end of the 20th Century. This site is great for those that are starting to grow wary of all the temple visiting, and are ready for a different piece of history. It is also a great option if you are wanting to get away from the weather a bit, as the kilns are located safely covered in a structure.

9. Wat Si Sawai

Another great temple ground to visit when taking an adventure to the land of Sukhothai is that of Wat Si Sawai. This temple differs from the others as it originally constructed as a Hindu shrine, rather than a Buddhist ground. Standing as one of the oldest temples in the area, Wat Si Sawai also has its own unique form of architecture that allows you to see a bit of a different style when comparing all of the other ancient ruins that are visited daily. Again, the best time to look at these ruins is either early in the day or later in the day to help avoid the numerous tourists.

10. Go On Your Own Adventure

Like we mentioned before, one of the best ways to fully immerse yourself in the land that you are visiting (in this case, Sukhothai) is to step away from the tour guides and to make your own adventure. There are many places in the city where you can rent a bike to ride, and the rest is your journey to follow! All you need is a map, your bike, and your sense of adventure, and you will get to experience all of the beauty that Sukhothai has to offer right in front of you.

Obviously, there are many other areas or tourist guided things that you can take part in when you visit Sukhothai, but we think we have provided a pretty good glimpse into what the beautiful land has to offer. Just remember, while conducting your research for your trip, to remember that the majority of these places listed are considered sacred to the culture. It would be a good idea to read up on how to be respectful when visiting these sites before jumping right in. We hope you have enjoyed our list of the ten best things to do in Sukhothai, and that you have your own adventure.
