10 Things to Do in Munich for First Time Visitors

Munich

When you think of Germany, everything that comes to mind is something that you can only get the best of in Munich. Munich features some of Germany’s best architecture, best foods, best culture, best Oktoberfest, and so many more. Munich is central to the history and culture of Germany, and if ever you were en route to the country, this city should be one of your first stops. There are plenty of things that you can do here; but if you were a first time Munich visitor, these are the 10 things that you must do first before anything else.

1. Marienplatz

This is probably one of the most visited sites in all of Munich, especially since it’s been the city’s main square since 1158. That’s an incredibly long time, but the fact that it still stands to be a main attraction is truly a testament to how amazing it is to see this place. The square was named after a Marian column, but there’s so much more to it that just that. You’d have to just see it to believe.

2. English Garden

Throughout centuries, this garden has gone through so many layout changes. That’s to be expected, though, considering that this garden is one of the largest urban parks globally. It’s a large mass of greenery in the bustle of Munich, and it offers a great respite for residents and tourists alike.

3. Asam Church

If you want to see some authentic German Baroque architecture, there’s no better place to see it other than at Asam Church. Be prepared to have your breath taken away by centuries-old designs and build. This church has been around since 1733, and it hasn’t really changed much apart from the restoration of the choir, which was damaged in a bombing in 1944.

4. Neues Rathaus

This place is also known as the New Town Hall, which is basically the main governmental building in Munich. The architecture is neo-gothic and highly impressive. It’s one of the most recognizable buildings in Munich.

5. Viktualienmarkt

Shop like a true Munich local and go to Viktualienmarkt for an authentic German experience. You won’t only find fresh foods and German delicacies. Over the years, the market has evolved to what it is now. You’ll find exotic ingredients here and a collection of other fares that goes beyond what an average farmers’ market offers.

6. Nymphenburg Palace

You can’t leave Munich without visiting a German palace, and the Nymphenburg is a great place to start. It’s the equivalent of Paris’ Versailles, and it’s probably one of the most stunning places you’ll visit in Munich. The expansive grounds alone are something that you’d want to take time to explore. There are plenty of things to discover here, so make sure you allot at least a day for this palace alone.

7. Munich Residence

This establishment happens to be the former royal palace, and once you’re there, you’ll understand why. This place actually began its life as a castle back in 1385. It has now evolved into a wonderful museum that houses some impressive Renaissance artworks and room displays.

8. BMW Welt

If you can know one thing in Germany today, it’s the fact that they manufacture some of the best luxury cars in the entire world. At the BMW Museum, you can get to know everything about this part of German engineering and learn the history of car-making there.

9. St. Peter’s Church

This is the oldest parish church in the city, and this is reason enough for you to visit this marvelous landmark. It happens to sit on the only prominent elevation in the oldest part of Munich, so the church actually stands out in a great way. The best way to experience the church is by climbing the 299 steps to get to the top of the church. You’ll get the most amazing and unforgettable panoramic view of Munich.

10. Tierpark Hellabrunn

This place is also known as Hellabrunn Zoo or Munich Zoo. If you’re thinking you didn’t go to Munich just to go to a zoo, think again. You’ll get a good idea of what kind of animals are local to the area. It’s a great daytime activity that will get you relaxed and ready for more exploring.
