IWC Schaffhausen is unveiling a redesigned Da Vinci collection that mimic timepieces from the 1960’s tonneau case. Before this update, the last update was in 2007. The brand has given some insight to this latest re-do and says that it will be comprised of 36mm models that will be tailored to women and there will be a handful of men’s models that will be designed with haute horlogerie complications.

The first of this series to be released will combine a chronograph’s hour and minute counter with a moon phase confined to a single subdial display. The watchmakers faced a challenge with the watch, trying to combine the chronograph counters with the moon phase. With the moon phase at 12 o’clock, this meant that any hands that would be added there would have to move right through the moon disk, but the problem was resolved. This watch is going to be an all-new IWC Caliber 89630 and it incorporates a silver-plate moon disk with a rounded, dark-blue area that represents the Earth’s shadow. It rotates to show the waxing and waning of the moon, a very unique feature for any watch. This is truly an iconic watch and one that is expected to regain its popularity in a new, redesigned way.
