What Makes Liberty HealthShare Different: A Healthcare Sharing Ministry Explained

As Americans increasingly question whether their healthcare financing options serve their interests, organizations like Liberty HealthShare offer a different approach. In the insurance world premiums climb while claim denials mount.

Federal policy shifts threaten millions with loss of access. As they are not insurance, healthcare sharing ministries offer a distinct model that allows members to be more in control of their healthcare and healthcare decisions.

Liberty HealthShare represents one such alternative. The ministry functions as a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable Christian medical cost-sharing ministry, not an insurance company. This distinction shapes every aspect of operations and what members can expect from participation.

Healthcare sharing ministries occupy a unique position within American healthcare financing. When Congress passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010, lawmakers recognized these faith-based communities as a category separate from both insurance and uninsured status. Liberty HealthShare received federal recognition as an eligible healthcare sharing ministry in 2014, exempting members from ACA mandates requiring insurance purchase.

Canton, Ohio-based Liberty HealthShare explicitly states it “is not an insurance company nor is it offered through an insurance company.” The ministry’s sharing programs “do not guarantee or promise that a member’s medical bills will be paid or assigned to others for payment,” according to its disclosure statements.

Members remain personally responsible for unpaid medical bills regardless of whether they receive payments for medical expenses through the sharing community. Whether fellow members choose to contribute toward someone’s medical bills remains entirely voluntary.

Community-Based Financing

Liberty HealthShare facilitates voluntary sharing among members who support each other based on shared Christian values. Monthly contributions from the ministry’s members fund the sharing of eligible medical expenses within the community.

“Our focus is on our members, not on shareholders or next quarter’s profit,” Chief Executive Officer Dorsey Morrow explains. “We are here to help facilitate sharing between our members. We are not driven by profit. After deducting a small percentage to operate the ministry, the contributions coming in should equal the contributions that go out.”

This facilitation model prioritizes member needs over contractual obligations. The ministry employs approximately 160 team members who guide members through healthcare decisions and maintain personal relationships with participants.

Operational Differences

Insurance companies enter legally binding contracts obligating them to pay covered claims according to policy terms. Liberty HealthShare operates through sharing guidelines that members agree to follow, but these guidelines do not create contractual guarantees. The ministry reviews medical expenses against the established criteria, then facilitates sharing among members who voluntarily contribute.

Member contributions generated measurable financial impact in 2024. Liberty HealthShare shared more than $454 million in billed medical charges, which vendors repriced to just over $154 million, generating more than $300 million in member savings. Since 2014, the ministry has facilitated nearly $5 billion in eligible, repriced medical expenses.

The ministry employs multiple specialized vendors who negotiate with medical providers to control expenses. Staff members include nurses who understand medical complexities and guide participants through healthcare decisions. Call center representatives regularly pray with and for members facing health challenges.

“We have a list that is distributed internally every Friday of prayer requests from our members,” Morrow shares. “Whether it’s with the member or for the member, we are about prayer. We strongly believe in that here.”

Don Winslett experienced this member-to-member model firsthand during prostate cancer treatment. “It’s still hard for me to believe how powerful the Liberty HealthShare community was. It really worked out well for me,” Winslett explained. Fellow members shared his $58,000 in eligible medical costs.

“It was always a little difficult for me dealing with the insurance companies because to them you truly are just a number,” Winslett reflected. “Liberty HealthShare is the conduit, but it was my fellow members who shared my eligible medical expenses. For them, I’m very thankful.”

Transparency and Member Experience

Liberty HealthShare distinguishes itself through financial transparency. The ministry ranks as the only healthcare sharing organization in the United States holding both Candid’s  GuideStar Gold Seal and Charity Navigator’s 4-Star rating. Visitors to the ministry’s website can access annual audit reports, IRS Form 990 documents, sharing statistics, and program guidelines.

Staff members work within established guidelines while recognizing that rigid application of rules can create hardship. When a member misunderstood how Medicare coordination worked with her sharing program, the ministry’s team repriced her bills and facilitated sharing of eligible expenses.

“We worked with her so that she wasn’t left in what should be her golden years, dealing with some sizable medical debt,” Morrow explains in a recent interview.

Members rate their experiences through multiple platforms. The ministry maintains a 4.5-star rating on Google, 4.5 stars on Trustpilot, and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Member surveys conducted every six months showed nearly 80% reporting satisfaction or high satisfaction with their membership.

The ministry encourages members to question costs and treatment recommendations rather than passively accepting provider decisions. “Our Member Care team takes the time to talk with members to help them understand what healthcare service is being delivered and challenging some of the decisions that are being made, including what they’re being charged and why,” Morrow states. “We work in partnership with our members to get them the care they need at an affordable cost.”
