10 Fabulous Reasons to Visit Houat Island in France

Houat is a small French island that is located just off the coast of Brittany in the entrance to the Baie de Quiberon. While many tourists visiting France choose destinations on the mainland, there are many good reasons why you should consider visiting Houat and here are ten of these.

1. The Beautiful Beaches

One of the best features of this island is its beautiful beaches. Regardless of which side of the island you are on, you will find golden beaches where you can take a walk, relax, or soak up the sunshine. On the west side of the island, you can also see the continent and the surrounding islands. A visit to the beach is also the perfect opportunity to take a dip in the crystal clear water and cool off.

2. Accessibility

If you want to stay on an island, then this is one of the most accessible on the coast of France. There are boats running from many ports on the mainland that will transport you to Houat. Most people depart from the port in Belle-Île. Once on the island, it is easy to get around. Although most people explore the island on foot, there is also public transport available to take you from one end of the island to another.

3. The Eclosarium

The main tourist attraction on Houat is the Eclosarium. This is a museum with the unusual focus of plankton. There are also exhibits pertaining to the history and culture of the island and an on-site shop that predominantly sells products made from seaweed. This is an interesting place to visit if you are interested in either ecology or local history.

4. Close to Höedic

Houat has a twin-island called Höedic that is just a short boat trip away. This tiny island measures just 1.5 miles long and 0.5 miles across, so a walk around the perimeter of the island is easily achievable. Not only has this small island got stunning beaches, there are also plenty of other things to see before taking the boat back to Houat.

5. Stunning Scenery and Views

No matter where you stand on Houat, you are treated to spectacular views. From the east side of the island, you can enjoy panoramic views of the sea. Cross to the east coast of the island and you can admire the outline of the continent and nearby islands.

6. Enjoy Fishing

If fishing is an activity you enjoy in your leisure time, then Houat is a great choice of destination. There is the option to fish off the coast near the port or to take a fishing trip on a boat. If you are a novice at this activity, you can opt to go on a trip with a guide.

7. Great for Hiking

The size of this island means that hiking is an achievable activity even for those who are not particularly fit. However, the varied terrain makes it interesting enough for hiking enthusiasts to enjoy, too. While you are enjoying a hike, you have the opportunity to diverse wildlife, flora, and fauna of the island.

8. Traditional French Cuisine

No trip to France is complete without trying some of the traditional French cuisines. There is a good choice of cafes and restaurants on the island that will suit all tastes and budget. Whether you want a light snack at lunch or want to enjoy a fine dining experience to celebrate a special occasion, there is a venue on this island that will meet your needs.

9. Great for Sailing

Houat is a popular place to visit for people who enjoy sailing as there is a port that is accessible throughout the year. If you have your own boat or have chartered a yacht, it is possible to take a day trip to the island or to moor up and spend the night either on your vessel or in one of the island’s hotels. You can then explore everything the island offers.

10. Admire the Architecture

The island is home to some wonderful examples of French architecture and there are many significant structures you can admire during your visit. Some of these include Le Château Turpault, Église Saint-Géran, and Citadelle de Bella-Île-en-Mer. Each of these structures is of cultural, historical, and architectural interest.
