Emma Watson

Every success story is unique, yet the obstacles they encountered and the lessons they learned are often similar. Each of us have our own goals and dreams we pursue, and learning from those who have been there before us can save us a lot of time and frustration. Take for example actress Emma Watson who has achieved very much in just a few years.  How exactly has she managed to do it?  You’d think her career might have ended after Harry Potter but no, she’s a shining star who continues to grow.

Here are 10 rules of success according to Emma Watson:

1. Take the road less traveled.

This has been a perennial piece of advice for ages, yet it is amazing how many people are more comfortable treading well-known paths. There is a unique adventure story to every road less traveled, mainly because there are so many thing not yet discovered. Sometimes the less traveled path is sunlit while other times it may be dark and scary. The excitement often comes from the fact that you find yourself making the journey alone. But untold numbers of successful people have made the journey and come out on the other side shining.

2. Ignore the critics.

Be aware that you live in a world where everything you say and do will be magnified by 100 because of the Internet. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. One thing is certain: you will always have critics. Whether your goal is to become a world famous actor or start a community-based organization to feed poor people, people will find something to criticize about you or your goals. Many people realize this and ignore the critics. Becoming successful requires you to have a thicker skin.

3. Challenge yourself.

Challenging yourself is something people often do when starting out to be successful, but when they reach a certain point they become complacent and lower their expectations of themselves. The goal is to find a point between complacency and believing you can attain perfection. As it is said, there is always room for improvement, so look for the areas you need to improve at now. There will be others you discover later.

4. Be passionate.

If there is one quality of success that runs through the lives of successful people, it is the idea of being passionate about what you want to do. You don’t want the flash-in-the-pan type of passion that burns you out in a short while, but the kind that has you waking up every morning wanting to right back at pursuing your dreams and goals. People often let a work routine deflect their passion because their work often doesn’t match their goals and dreams. Leave your work at the office and every day when you leave the job, use it as an opportunity to re-energize yourself to pursue your passion.

5. Love yourself.

One of the earlier realities is that you will have your critics regardless of how successful you become. If you don’t love yourself you are likely to find yourself paying more attention to the critics than to your inner voice. The greatest barrier to letting the critics influence you is to have a deep and wide wall that comes from loving yourself and knowing what you have accomplished – and what you can accomplish. You have faults and there are likely to have setbacks. Achievers keep moving forward through the belief they have in themselves.

6. Do everything that time allows.

There are a number of parts to a whole, and as your continue your journey to success you will discover there are many parts that you didn’t even know existed. When you discover something new, make the effort to explore it. But be sure your exploration doesn’t side track you from your main goal. It takes discipline and commitment not to veer off the main road. But those parts that make up the complete journey should be explored as much as possible.

7. Do what you love.

This sounds a lot like passion, but it is a different thing. Passion is great. Everyone has a passion for something, but not every passion can be mapped out to a journey and followed to a successful end. Doing is different than feeling. Passion can be seen as the energy source, while doing what you love is the action that results from the passion. In fact, doing what you love will be what keeps you going through the tough times because you will see and remember what you have accomplished.

8. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

This requires a balance because if you are not serious enough you will lose focus and quality of your efforts. On the other hand, if you are too serious you will, as they say, have an oversized impression of yourself, with the result of believing you have achieved something when your real success is still over the horizon. Find a middle ground as your move forward through your journey and realize that you should actually be enjoying yourself along the way.

9. Stand for something.

The world is now a very political place, and there is not much likelihood that will change anytime soon. So the challenge is not whether you stand for something but what you stand for. A couple of notes about deciding what to stand for. First, it cannot consume so much of your time that it detracts from your main goal. Second, it needs to be an area or topic that you are very familiar with and have a certain amount of experience with. Standing for something can be an energizer and help you achieve your goal, as other people will be supportive of your stance and become an added source of energy. Be sure to think your choice through, as it can be a double-edged sword.

10. Have fun.

A common saying heard almost every day is “life is too short.” This is true, and regardless of your age or how long your journey may take, it is important to connect your success with having fun along the way. You can almost be guaranteed not to have fun if you have no one to share your successes with or lack a support structure. In fact, these are the same people who will pull you away from your work when they see you aren’t having fun! Why would you have it any other way?
