Early Life

Born in Manhattan on August 17, 1943, Robert De Niro is the only child of Robert De Niro Sr. and Virginia Admiral, who are both painters. When he was two years old, his parents divorced after his father revealed that he was gay. As a child, De Niro showed promise as an actor, and he first performed in a production of Wizard of Oz as the Cowardly Lion when he was 10. At the age of just 16, he dropped out of school to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. To give him the best start in his career, he studied at the Lee Strasberg Actors Studio, the Stella Adler Conservatory, and HB Studio.

De Niro’s Acting Career

The actor didn’t land his first role until he was 20 when he had a part in the 1963 film ‘The Wedding Party’, although the film was not officially released until 1969. A year later, he was in ‘Bloody Mama’, but he didn’t begin to gain recognition until 1973 when he played a dying MLB player in ‘Bang the Drum Slowly’. In the same year, he had a role in ‘Mean Streets’. Robert De Niro got his break when he was cast as Vito Corleone in Coppola’s ‘The Godfather Part II’ in 1974. For his performance in this film, De Niro won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Over the coming years, De Niro established a strong working relationship with Martin Scorsese, with whom he had worked on ‘Mean Streets’ Between 1976 and 1995, De Niro had roles in Scorsese films including ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘New York, New York’, ‘Raging Bull’, ‘The King of Comedy’, ‘Casino’, ‘Goodfellas’, and ‘Cape Fear’. They reprised their working relationship in 2019 for ‘The Irishman’. In each of these films, Scorsese directed and De Niro played a lead role. However, they have collaborated on other films in which they have both had parts or provided voices. These include the 1991 movie ‘Guilty by Suspicion’ and the 2004 animation ‘Shark Tale’.

Some other films in which De Niro appeared throughout the late 70s included ‘1900’ and ‘The Deer Hunter’. However, he was worried about becoming stereotyped into serious roles and playing a mobster. So, he decided to take on some comedic role. He is now known as much for his roles in comedy films as he is for his mobster roles. Some examples of comedies in which he has appeared include ‘Meet the Parents’, ‘Meet the Fockers’, ‘Analyze This’, ‘Bad Grandpa’, ‘Brazil’, and Midnight Run’. He was able to combine a role as a mobster in a comedy film when he appeared in the 2013 film ‘The Family’.

De Niro has also diversified into many other film genres, which means he is considered a very versatile actor. Just some of his films in other genres include ‘Falling in Love’, ‘Ture Confessions’, ‘This Boy’s Life’, ‘In the Line of Fire’, ‘Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein’, ‘Angel Heart’, ‘The Untouchables’, and ‘Awakenings’. His most recent films are ‘The Irishman’ and ‘The Joker’, both of which were released in 2019.

His Personal Life

In his personal life, Robert De Niro has been married twice. He married his first wife, actress Diahnne Abbott, in 1976. Together, they had a son called Raphael, who once worked as an actor but who now works in real estate in New York. Abbott already had a daughter from a previous relationship, and De Niro adopted her. She took on his name to become Drena De Niro, and she is now an actress. Abbot and De Niro divorced in 1988. De Niro then had a long-term relationship with former model Toukie Smith. The couple had twin sons, Julian and Aaron, who were born using a surrogate mother in 1995. Smith and De Niro split not long after the birth of their sons.

Actress Grace Hightower became De Niro’s second wife in 1997. A year after their wedding, their son Elliot was born. The following year, the couple separated. However, they did not finalize their divorce and they reconciled in 2004. With the help of a surrogate, Hightower and De Niro had a daughter in 2011. Hightower and De Niro live in a five-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. De Niro has invested in properties in New York City since 1989. He currently owns properties in both the east and west sides of Manhattan and also owns a 78-acre estate in Gardiner, New York.
