What is a Rolex Smurf?

Rolex Smurf

Over the years, Rolex has been known for manufacturing a number of rather unique watches, often with equally unique names attached to them. One of the most unique watches that they ever produced was one that ended up getting a nickname that is reminiscent of what might have been your favorite childhood cartoon. It’s called the Rolex Smurf. If you’re even remotely familiar with the cartoon itself, then you probably already guessed that it has something to do with the blue color of the watch.

You could make that association, even if you’ve never laid eyes on one of these watches before in your life. By now, you’re probably intrigued enough to want to know more about the Rolex Smurf. What exactly does it look like? What is the official name of this watch? Is it still in production? Perhaps the most important question involves finding out why it’s so special. After all, is it just the name or is there something about the watch itself that genuinely makes it stand out? You’ve come to the right place, because you can get answers to all of these questions and more right here.

What Is It?

As previously mentioned, the Rolex Smurf is not the official name for this watch. It’s a cute nickname, but it’s not quite a name that matches up with the style of Rolex in the way that they named their products. The official name is the Rolex Submariner Date Ref 116619LB. Now that you know the official name of the watch, you also know why it has a nickname. After all, that official name isn’t exactly something that rolls off the tongue easily, is it?

The name itself, coupled with the appearance of the watch, made the nickname something that stuck almost from the very beginning. It didn’t take long before people were referring to it by the Smurf nickname and once that particular nickname reached social media, it was one that would forever be synonymous with this particular watch. If you’re still not convinced as to how the watch got the Smurf nickname, consider the next paragraph. It discusses the appearance of the watch, which will probably help this whole thing make a lot more sense than it does right now.

Appearance Really Is Everything

The watch is 18 karat white gold with one of the most brilliant blue dials that you’ve ever seen. The bezel is the same color of blue as the face, making it stand out dramatically against the white gold. Furthermore, Rolex decided to put lacquer on the face of the dial so that this blue color would shine so brightly in the light that you almost have to turn the watch slightly in order to actually see the time. That is precisely why it became known as the Smurf watch.

If you’ve not seen the cartoon, it involves a bunch of little blue cartoon characters running around trying to save the world in their little land of fairy tail. Amazingly, the blue color on the watch comes pretty close to matching the blue color of the cartoon characters, thereby forever linking the two together. In addition, Rolex has capitalized on the history of the Submariner watches, a product that they have designed since the 1960s.

In almost every case, the watches that they’ve produced in this line have had a brilliant blue dial. The difference is that all the previous watches were either set in gold or had a combination of stainless steel and gold, thereby drawing your attention to that part of the watch as opposed to focusing solely on the blue face. Once they stripped all of that away, your eyes go straight to the face of the watch and you can hardly take your eyes off of it. The fact that it has a lacquer over the top of it only serves to make it shinier and even harder to look away from. It definitely changes the appearance in such a way that the eyes are naturally drawn to it. In fact, you scarcely even notice the 18 karat white gold. Instead, it becomes all about looking at the face of the watch and when you do, you’re not seeing much else.

Worth Its Weight in Gold

On top of being a watch that really gets your attention because of its visual qualities, this is also a watch that is big enough to capture your imagination. Being a Submariner watch, it only stands to reason that it would be larger than most. However, it’s big, even by those standards. As a matter of fact, it has a 44 mm diameter with a thickness of 36 mm. That makes it big enough to take up some serious real estate on your arm and then some.

It also weighs 155 grams. As you might have already guessed, it takes somebody who is capable of wearing a rather large timepiece to pull this off successfully. It’s definitely not a watch that’s made for a dainty wrist. By the same token, it’s also not made for someone who has a thin wallet. These watches start out at just over $38,000 used. If you want one that’s never been worn, you’re looking at closer to $41,000 for the purchase price.

These watches aren’t made anymore, which is one of the reasons that they cost so much money. They’re extremely popular, so anyone who wants to get their hands on one is going to have to fork over the cash required to do it. The good news is that once you make the decision to go ahead and purchase one, you’re likely to have a watch that is capable of standing up to practically anything you decide to throw at it and then some. As a matter of fact, there’s every chance t hat you’ll be able to wear this watch for years and years, provided you give it the attention that it deserves.
