Steven Tyler’s Childhood

Born in Manhattan on March 26, 1948, Tyler was called Steven Victor Tallarico at birth. He was not known as Steven Tyler until he became a performer. He is the son of secretary Susan Ray, who is of Polish and English ancestry, and Victor A. Tallarico, a musician, and pianist of Italian ancestry. At the age of three, Tyler moved to the Bronx with his parents and older sister, Lynda, and then to Yonkers when he was nine. Tyler attended Roosevelt High School but was expelled because he was using drugs. He then graduated from Quintano’s School for Young Professionals. As a teen, he was a fan of the Rolling Stones and people often said he looked like Mick Jagger.

His Career in the 1970s

In 1969, Tyler went to see a band called Jam Band play. The guitarist of this group was Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton played the bass. Perry and Hamilton would later become Tyler’s bandmates. At this time, Tyler dreamed of being in a rock band and had already begun writing music, including the future Aerosmith single ‘Dream On’. Aerosmith was formed in 1970, with Tyler as the frontman and Hamilton and Perry on bass and guitars respectively. They were joined by Joey Kramer on the drums and Ray Tabano on rhythm guitar. The band moved to Boston together to launch their music. However, there were issues with Tabano and he was replaced with Brad Whitford.

The band began by touring the Boston club circuit, and they got their break when they performed at the legendary nightclub ‘Max’s Kansas City’ in 1972. At this gig, they showcased their music to record company executives and this led to them signing a deal with Columbia Records. The following year, they released their eponymous debut album, followed by their second album ‘Get Your Wings’ a year later. Aerosmith continued to tour between recording music and opened for other bands at their gigs. In 1976, they released ‘Dream On’, the song that Tyler had written before the band formed, and it became a minor hit. By 1975, they had begun to break into the mainstream music industry when they released ‘Toys in the Attic’. Their place in the music industry was secured when this album was followed by another, ‘Rocks’, just a year later.

They had also begun to get top 40 positions when they released their singles. The first to achieve this level of success was the 1975 single ‘Sweet Emotion’. Others that were hits at this time include ‘Walk This Way’, ‘Last Child’, ‘Dream On’, ‘Home Tonight’, and ‘Back in the Saddle’. 1976 was also a good year for Tyler as an individual, as he was being recognized as a major rock star and he had become a sex symbol with thousands of fans idolizing him. His photograph appeared on both the cover of ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine and on the cover of Aerosmith’s fifth album ‘Draw the Line’. In the later years of the 1970s, the band continued to release hit singles. The five albums that they had already released had all gone on to become multiplatinum by this time. As a result of their success, they increased their live performances and released videos.

Tyler in the 1980s

By the late 1970s, things had begun to take a downward turn for Aerosmith. Spending all their time together and heavy drug use had begun to take its toll on all the members of the rock band. Perry and Tyler had even earned the nickname ‘The Toxic Twins’ because of their notoriety for heroin binges and for taking stimulants.

In 1979, Perry had a huge argument with his bandmates at the World Series of Rock and quit Aerosmith. He founded his own band while Aerosmith replaced him with Jimmy Crespo. Things got worse for Aerosmith when Tyler was badly injured in a motorcycle accident in 1980. Not only was he hospitalized for two months following the accident, but he was also unable to record for most of 1981. Then, Brad Whitford left the band and was replaced by Rick Dufay. Although the band in their new formation continued to write music and to tour, things were not the same. Furthermore, Tyler’s drug abuse had increased dramatically, and he had begun roaming the streets looking for dealers.

In 1984, Tyler and Whitford went to see Aerosmith in concert and met up with their former bandmates backstage. They agreed to reunite and relaunch Aerosmith. The band replaced their manager and signed a record deal with Geffen Records. They released the album ‘Done with Mirrors’ in 1985. Tyler was still suffering badly from his drug addiction, and the band staged an intervention to get him into a rehabilitation program in 1986. Following on from Tyler’s successful rehabilitation, his bandmates followed in his footsteps.

When Run-DMC did a cover of ‘Walk This Way’ featuring Aerosmith in 1986, it helped Aerosmith to make a comeback into mainstream music and introduced them to a new generation of music fans. In 1987, they released the multiplatinum album ‘Permanent Vacation’. From this album, there were three top 20 hits; ‘Rag Doll’, ‘Angel’, and ‘Dude (Looks Like a Lady)’. After spending some time touring with Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith released the album ‘Pump’ in 1989, which sold more than seven million copies and produced several top 10 hit singles. Aerosmith won their first Grammy Award for ‘Janie’s Got a Gun’, which had featured on this album and was a top 10 hit.

His Music in the 1990s

The phenomenal success of Aerosmith continued into the 1990s. In 1993, they released ‘Get a Grip’, which was their most successful album internationally and it sold 15 million copies. Some of their best-known singles from this album include ‘Crazy’, ‘Cryin’, ‘Eat the Rich’, and ‘Livin’ on the Edge’. The release of this album was followed by a tour of the same name. It was their most extensive tour and covered 240 shows in 30 countries.

Towards the end of the 1990s, the band almost split for a second time when their manager, Tim Collins, began spreading rumors. These related to the band’s drug use, arguments between the group, and accusations that Tyler was unfaithful to his wife. Instead of splitting, they fired Collins. Despite sacking their manager, they managed to release the 1997 album ‘Nine Lives’. Tyler wrote the song ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ for the 1998 film Armageddon. It was Aerosmith’s first number one hit and it remains the only song to debut at number one on the Hot 100 that is by a rock band.
