10 Things to do in Malibu, CA for First Time Visitors

Most people would agree that Malibu, California has more than its fair share of things to do. A lot of the activity there centers around getting back to nature through hiking or going to the beach. Of course, there are other things to do there as well. If you’re interested, go ahead and read about 10 things you can enjoy doing in the area. Once you’re finished reading, you’ll probably want to get there as quickly as you can.

1. Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

Who wouldn’t love having the chance to explore an area like this? It’s the perfect place for anyone who really enjoys being outside and enjoying nature. There are more than 500 miles that can be explored here, complete with some breathtaking views and plenty of places to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch.

2. Zuma Beach

If you’re into surfing, this is one of the best places for you to spend your time. This is a relatively small beach, at less than two miles, but there are lifeguards on duty at all times. Despite the small geographic area in question, this spot offers some of the best surfing the state of California has to offer.

3. Malibu Creek State Park

One of the most beautiful parks in the whole state, if not the entire country, you might just want to stay here for days. There are lots of places to hike and in the middle of it all, there’s a stunning clear, blue lake surrounded by rocks and outcroppings.

4. Solstice Canyon

The name says it all here. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the mood to go hiking, exploring remote areas, have a picnic, or even walk your dog, there is a place for you to enjoy things here. It really is an area where you can let things slow down for a while, all so you can enjoy the most important things in life. It’s a great place to get a new perspective on things or just to recharge your batteries.

5. Backbone Trail

If you are up for a hike that’s more challenging than most, you may want to try your hand at this. It’s a trail that stretches throughout the Santa Monica Mountains, and that’s a distance of a little more than 67 miles. Obviously, that’s a lot of hiking. It’s also one of the most popular areas in California.

6. Topanga State Park

This is a natural area that is comprised of more than 14,000 acres. You can choose to hike through much of it, and in some portions, you can ride a dirt bike or even go horseback riding. There are all kinds of deep canyons in the area, and when you consider how much area is covered here, there is always something new to explore.

7. Adamson House Museum

This is an old Spanish colonial house that was originally built as a beach house in the late 1920s. Today, it serves not only as a museum, but also as a premier location for tours of all kinds, mainly related to home and garden events.

8. Malibu Creek

This is one of the most gorgeous places in all of Los Angeles County. It’s a creek that flows through the area on a year-round basis, and it’s so clear that you can see the bottom. It’s a great place to go fishing, or you might decide to go for a relaxing walk along the banks of the creek.

9. Malibu Wine Safaris

If you’re intrigued by the name, you’re not the only one. This is definitely not your standard wine tasting trip, to say the least. They actually have safari animals there on site, as the name implies. In the same day, you can sample your favorite wine while looking into the eyes of a giraffe or some other animal that you would otherwise never expect to see in California. At first glance, you might think it’s the wine that’s causing you to see things, but rest assured, the animals are really there.

10. Malibu Pier


This pier was built in the early 1900s. It has a storied history and today, you can walk the pier while you enjoy eating at some of the best restaurants the state has to offer, all while shopping and enjoying the sea air.
