Why Tommy Wiseau Only has a Net Worth of $500 Thousand

The name Tommy Wiseau may not be all that familiar to you. He’s an actor, producer and director originally from Poland, but he has been living in the United States for quite some time now. As a matter of fact, he’s been active in the entertainment industry for about 15 years, yet his net worth is listed at approximately $500,000. For some people, this might seem like quite a bit of money but when you think about the industry that he is involved in, you quickly realize that most actors make more money than this in a single year. Much of the time, they make more for doing a single project. That has caused some people to ask why he’s only made $500,000 over the course of a decade and a half.

The thing is, there are a few answers to that question. First and foremost, he hasn’t been involved in big-name projects that have made a ton of money. Instead, most of his projects have been fairly low budget and they haven’t been widely released so in many cases, people haven’t even had the opportunity to be exposed to his work. It’s not at all uncommon for him to produce, direct and star in the same project. That means that much of the time, he’s also financing the majority of the project, if not the entire thing. It might be as simple as him not meeting the right people or perhaps he just hasn’t had the right opportunity to properly finance a project so he can do the type of advertising that needs to be done in order to catapult him to A-list status. Whatever the reason might be, he continues to participate in a lot of projects that are critically acclaimed, but the majority of the public never sees them. He’s also done a lot of projects for streaming services like Hulu, but he hasn’t been able to break into that mainstream television or movie role and that has kept his net worth down considerably.

There is another potential reason. He really doesn’t like to be in the limelight. As a matter of fact, he frequently refuses to go into public situations where he’s likely to be recognized and when he is in public, he usually tries to disguise his appearance by using dark sunglasses or some other type of method so that people won’t recognize who he is. You might even go as far as saying that when he’s not working, he’s almost a recluse. This can make it difficult to make a lot of money in Hollywood because it stops him from mingling and making the right connections with those people that could potentially make it happen. So far, virtually everything he’s done in the entertainment industry has been completely self-made. He doesn’t really have a tendency to rely on other people for his level of success. Unfortunately, it’s usually a lot more about who you know then what you know in Hollywood, so when you’re not mingling and making those connections, it can hurt your career and ultimately, your bank account.

Last but not least, he doesn’t have a tendency to take on multiple projects at one time. He is a very creative individual and he likes having creative control over what he does. As such, he prefers to take a lot of time to develop an idea and make sure that it’s exactly the way he wants it before he moves on to the next step. This costs him money because he’s not working on multiple projects at one time like many other people in the entertainment industry. In addition, he has a tendency to refuse to release a project unless it turns out exactly the way he wants it. This often means that he spends more time than what some might consider necessary revamping a project until it turns into something he’s happy with. Furthermore, there are those times when he has spent a considerable amount of time on a project and then ends up scrapping it before it’s all said and done.

As you can see, all of this adds up. It’s also worth mentioning that is an independent individual who, as previously mentioned, doesn’t make a lot of those Hollywood connections. That means he doesn’t get the endorsement deals and commercials that a lot of famous people get. This is where a lot of individuals really make the majority of their money so without that, he’s not likely to make near as much. When you consider the fact that he also finances his own projects much of the time, it’s easy to see why his net worth is less than many others in this industry. He doesn’t make as much to begin with and he ends up spending the majority of it on the next project.
