10 Things You Didn’t Know about the Yamaha FZ-09

1. It used to be known by a different name

To be perfectly honest, this bike was always known by the name FZ-09. However, in 2017 Yamaha made the decision to change the name. Since then, it’s been known as the MT-09. You might not think that this really amounts to much, but if you want to buy one and you can’t find any new ones for sale under its old moniker, it might help to know what it’s currently called.

2. The bike is sometimes referred to as naked

Unless you’re brand new to motorcycles, you probably know what it means when a bike is referred to as naked or standard. Basically, it means that the bike doesn’t have a lot of extra bells and whistles. Its design is very basic, incorporating the things that are considered necessary and leaving the optional items off. It’s also very straightforward in the way it’s built so if you’re looking for something fancy, you won’t get anywhere looking in this particular category.

3. It incorporates a 4-stroke engine

Yamaha doesn’t include all the bells and whistles, but it didn’t skimp on engine performance, either. As a result, the engine on this particular bike is a 4-stroke model that’s liquid-cooled. It’s capable of producing more than enough horsepower to propel the lightweight bike quickly and efficiently.

4. It’s also a dual overhead cam

Engines that feature a dual overhead cam usually have a tendency to perform better than those that don’t include this technique. Yamaha wanted to create a motorcycle that was capable of accelerating quickly and traveling at fairly high speeds so it made sure that the engine was powerful enough to stand up to the task at hand.

5. It’s only been in production for a few years

This particular motorcycle has only been in production since 2014. As previously mentioned, the name was changed in 2017 but the bike itself has proven to be a rather popular option at Yamaha, appealing to individuals that want an economical bike for practical purposes, as well as those who are new to riding motorcycles.

6. It has traction control

Even though it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, it does have things that make it safe for the ride. As such, it incorporates a traction control system that helps the wheels stay in contact with the ground even when it’s being pushed beyond its limits or it’s being ridden over terrain where it’s difficult to get a good grip on the road.

10. It also incorporates a ride-by-wire system

This is rather new technology for a lot of motorcycles. It’s a lot like the fly-by-wire technology that’s used on jets. It’s supposed to make the throttle easier to control by incorporating a small onboard computer that constantly monitors throttle inputs and makes its own adjustments in order to maximize performance.
