10 Things You Didn’t Know about Alcoa CEO Roy Harvey

Have you ever heard of Roy Harvey, the Chief Executive Officer of Alcoa Corporation? If you’re wondering what Alcoa Corporation is, much less who Roy Harvey is, you can relax. You’re not alone. To give you a little background about the company, they deal with metals such as aluminum, along with a couple of lesser known ones like alumina and bauxite. They do business in no less than 10 different countries and they have more than 10,000 people working for them right now. Now that you know something about the company, it’s time to learn a few things about the person who it at the helm, Roy Harvey himself. If you’re curious, read on and find out 10 things about him that you probably didn’t already know.

1. Like most business professionals, he like to stay busy

He doesn’t just serve as the CEO, he’s also the president of the company. This isn’t really all that uncommon when it comes to CEO’s acting in at least two major roles within the same company. In fact, it has sort of become the standard these days. He says he likes the challenge and prefers to stay busy, so it works out well for him.

2. He survived some strife inside the company

Not so long ago, Alcoa split right down the middle and became two entirely separate companies. He wasn’t the CEO at the time that all of this was occurring but he was employed with the corporation and he managed to survive all of the fallout that naturally happened as a direct result of such a split. That’s something to be proud of in and of itself.

3. He’s versatile

A lot of people say this but he really lives it. Over the years, he’s worked on the financial department of the company and also served as a safety officer. Basically, he’s done it all at one point or another.

4. He’s well educated

He has a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University. That’s impressive enough, but the degree is one that’s quite rare- Mining Engineering. On top of that he later went to the University of Pennsylvania and got not one, but two Master’s degrees, at the same time. He graduated with one degree in International Business and another in Corporate Finance.

5. He knew he wanted to be in business from a young age

Some people just know they have a calling. Others know what they want to do when they are young children. That was the case for Harvey. He says that even when he was little, he knew he wanted to be in big business.

6. He sort of fell into mining

No pun intended, but he did sort of have the idea dropped in his lap when it comes to engineering for mining companies. He knew he wanted to work in something unique, but it wasn’t until he was a teenager that this idea hit him.

7. It all started with a desire to combine two entirely different things

You see, he wanted to be in business and he was certain of that, as previously mentioned. However, he also had a distinct love of science, mathematics to be exact. He wanted to find something that would allow him to incorporate all of these things into a single profession. He definitely found it.

8. He loves to see the world and experience all that it has to offer

He has an immense interest in other cultures and he loves having the opportunity to explore other parts of the world and experience those cultures for himself. He has had the chance to do exactly that, as his job has taken him to many different parts of the world over the years.

9. You might say he’s married to his work

You don’t become a successful CEO without spending a considerable amount of time at work. It’s not that you can’t do that and have a family too, but there are only so many hours in the day. Fortunately, he loves what he does and he doesn’t mind the long hours one bit.

10. He has a natural curiosity about almost everything

He says that he’s always had a strong desire to see how things work and to experience it first- hand. That’s one reason why he loves engineering. That natural curiosity has certain;y served him well over the years, giving him the chance to spearhead many important programs at work, as well as in the field of education.
