If you are a music fan, then you are probably well aware of the hit band Smashing Pumpkins. They have been around for quite a long time and they are still churning out one hit song after another. You will find that Billy Corgan is at the center of all of that. He is a musician and songwriter who has made millions. To be exact, he has assembled a net worth in the neighborhood of $50 million, so you know that he has been quite successful. You might be wondering how he has been able to do that. Continue reading to get some of those details and find out

Who Is Billy Corgan?

Before you can understand how someone has made their money, you first have to know who they are and where they have come from. Billy Corgan is from Elk Grove Village, Illinois and was born in 1967. He is one of the most well known and influential figures performing alternative rock music today. He is a founding member of Smashing Pumpkins, where he is the lead singer. In addition to that, he is the one responsible for having written a majority of their songs. This puts him in rare company as being able to sing and write songs with tremendous success. In addition to all of that, he has been heavily involved in much of the production work for the band through the years. As if that were not enough, Billy Corgan is also quite prolific at playing the guitar, keyboard, bass, harmonica, and he even knows how to play the ukulele.

Where Did the Money Come From?

If you really want to know how Billy Corgan came to the point where he has more than $50 million to his name, you just have to look some of his biggest years in the entertainment business. To begin, let us go back to the year 1991. This is when Smashing Pumpkins put out their first album titled Gish. That album would go on to become certified by the RIAA. In addition, Gish would be certified silver by BPI. Those distinctions may not tell you much, but it is indicative of just how successful Billy Corgan was right from the beginning. In that year alone, he would earn $1,060,000. That is an impressive figure no matter how you look at it, but it is even more so considering that this was 1991. That would be worth much more in today’s dollars.

Success would continue in 1993 with the release of the second album by the Smashing Pumpkins. That would be titled Siamese Dream. This one would become certified platinum four times over by both the RIAA and Musica Canada. It is also important to note that the album was certified platinum by both RMNZ and ARIA. In the end, this album would earn Corgan more than $4,500,000. So, you can see that he was well on his way to $50 million as early as 1993.

Now, let’s fast forward to the year 2001. Smashing Pumpkins would release a video album that contained their greatest hits. In addition, they would release a compilation album. That one alone would net them $1,540,000. The music video would earn Billy Corgan $125,000. He earned $900,000 from the release of The Machines of God in 2000 and $1,400,000 with the release of Adore in 1998. Success just followed him around everywhere.

Beyond Music

You might wonder if Billy Corgan has ever done anything besides singing. Interestingly enough, he would enter the relam of professional wrestling back in 2001. This was after he was once insulted by Lou E. and hit him in the head with the guitar. While that is not a recommended course of action, it nonetheless got him interested in the world of wrestling. He would harness that passion for the sport by founding Resistance Pro Wrestling in Chicago back in 2011. He would continue that for four years until he decided to join Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Today, it is called Impact Wrestling. He would actually become the president of that organization in August of 2016. That tenure would not last long, however, as he would leave the group in November of that same year. He ended up using some of the wealth gained from Smashing Pumpkins to purchase the National Wrestling Alliance. He would become the owner of that organization in the fall of 2017.

Where is He Heading?

Just recently, in 2019, Billy Corgan revealed that he would be releasing a solo album. That came out on November 22 and is already quite a success.

Conclusion

Billy Corgan has had a great deal of success in the entertainment business. He continues to enjoy the industry and is not afraid to branch off into new directions. Having just recently embarked on his own solo career, he is banking on his own notoriety as the lead singer of Smashing Pumpkins. While he might not gross as much money alone as he did with the group, it is obvious that he will soon be adding to that $50 million of net worth.
