Freefly Studios Invents Drone Surfing with $18,000 ALTA 8
The world of surfing appears to be finite with regard to technology and size of waves that a person can surf. But just when you think that waves are the biggest or surfers have maxed out their ability to get crazy, Washington based drone manufacturers Freefly Studios invents drone surfing. It’s even cooler looking than it sounds. Their newest $18,000 model ALTA 8 is so powerful it can tow people on water. Freefly claims they were doing 3-4 pulls per battery pack and pulls lasted approximately 30 seconds.
For over a decade, Freefly has incredible experience in the professional cinematography industry. It has given the company a unique ability to develop and bring innovative products to market that serve the needs of cinema and aerial professionals. If one thing is for certain, it’s that Freefly is passionate about pushing the envelope technologically in order to provide their customers with the tools to capture amazing footage.

Want to learn a bit more about the ALTA 8? Here are some unique facts from their website:
Testing
Each and every ALTA endures a barrage of component and system level tests designed to weed out items that do not meet our strict quality control levels. After passing this gauntlet of tests, each ALTA is test flown by a Freefly test pilot to ensure each ALTA flies as well as our personal machines.
Automatic Data Logging
ALTA 8 makes it easy to monitor and analyze the performance and ‘health’ of your machine using our proprietary high speed data logging via micro SD card. This flight log gives pilots access to a wide range of helpful data. Additionally Freefly publishes the flight data viewer application that our Engineering team uses to analyze flight data to help give customers actionable insight to their machine.
Quick Release
We hear from customers each and every day that our Toad in the Hole quick release system has dramatically improved their speed and flexibility on set. We decided early that the ALTA would utilize the TITH quick release on both the top and bottom of the drone, allowing unparalleled speed, flexibility, and creativity.
Unprecedented Support
Freefly provides a professional level of communication and support for ALTA pilots in the field. In addition to our active Freefly Forum, we have dedicated pilots on the technical support team to help ensure your success. Freefly also issues service bulletins to pilots as we discover bugs, issues, or simply ways that we can help you be more successful.
Vibration Isolation
Freefly pioneered the adjustable o-ring isolation design on the CineStar, and we’ve improved it further for the ALTA by upgrading the design to be tool less and quick release.
Weather Resistant
The ALTA features a lightweight molded plastic enclosure to cover the flight control and power distribution board to protect them from the elements.
