How Much is the Mass Effect Video Game Franchise Worth?

If you haven’t ever played the Mass Effect video game series, you’re probably one of the relatively few that hasn’t experienced it. As a matter of fact, Mass Effect has become far more than just a mere video game. In reality, it’s much more of a franchise than anything else. On the chance that you’re not already familiar with it, here’s some background information about the franchise. It all started in 2007 with the first game, which was essentially a combination of a space-based adventure game and a third-person shooter game, combined. It also served as one of the foremost role-playing games of its time. Developed by BioWare, a company based in Canada, it was originally manufactured for Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Later versions of the game would also incorporate several other gaming platforms. By the time the fourth game was released in 2017, it was available for almost every type of gaming system in existence.

All of this information tells you that the game itself is quite popular, but it still doesn’t explain the fact that Mass Effect has indeed become a franchise. When you think of a franchise in its purest form, you realize that it usually starts with something that is capable of truly capturing the attention of the general public. Once that happens, virtually anything is possible. In the case of Mass Effect, that first game is what started it all. People were clamoring to get their hands on it to the point that the company quickly decided to create a sequel. Eventually, several more games followed, not to mention a whole slew of other items. In fact, there are several novels and comics that surround the franchise. As it that weren’t enough, there are also films, board games, and even action figures. It’s true that the entire franchise has exploded into something that has really come into its own. There is no doubt that Mass Effect is now much more than a video game. It has actually become an entity unto itself, one that may very well have started with the video games, but today is something that is capable of completely standing on its own, even without the games themselves.

The real question is, how much is all of this worth? Again, it’s important to know something about the history of the franchise. You already know that the first game was immensely popular. So was the second one. Believe it or not, the second game was so popular that within only two weeks of its original release date, the company had already sold a full two million copies. That’s beyond impressive, to say the least. That being said, the truly amazing thing is that it didn’t stop there. By the date of the third game’s release, there had been a whopping seven millions copies sold. To build on that success, the third game sold upwards of 800,000 copies within just 24 hours. The company also had more than twice the amount of total sales than they had with the second game.

To date, there have been more than 20 million games sold, and that doesn’t even bring the rest of the franchise into the equation. When you add everything into the equation, including the comics, novels, films, board games, and action figures, you’re looking at a net worth of more than 92.3 million dollars. That’s a tremendous amount of money, especially for something that just came into being a little more than ten short years ago. The truly amazing thing is, the franchise isn’t done. The most recent game was just released last year, and the entire franchise is still going strong. There is no telling how much money the whole thing could be capable of making once it’s all said and done. There certainly isn’t any sign that things are slowing down. If anything, the entire franchise seems to still be gaining ground, becoming more and more popular with each passing day. More games are planned for future release dates, and there is plenty coming in other areas of the franchise as well. Who knows, by the time it’s all said and done, this franchise could easily rival, perhaps even surpass, some of the most popular franchises in history.
