His Story Summarized

When Jon Jones first started fighting at the UFC level, he became the youngest champion in the history of the organization since it first started dividing fighters out by weight class. He was only 23 when he defeated Mauricio Rua back in 2011 to become the light heavyweight champion. He also now has the record for the most title defenses in the history of the UFC. In addition to that, he has the most wins and the longest active win streak. To top things off, Jon Jones is also well known for his submission victories. You guessed it – he also owns that record. He has actually only lost one time, and that was a controversial decision in which he was disqualified.

Since he has never lost, you might be wondering how he ever lost any of his titles for any length of time. This was due to the fact that he was disciplined a few times between the years 2015 and 2017. This would result in him actually losing his title three separate times. It still has not stopped him from earning a lot of money in the process, however. The first time was in 2015 when he was charged with a felony hit and run. He was stripped of his title and he was removed from the official UFC rankings at the time. He would come back to fight in UFC in 2016 and 2017. He was quickly successful, winning several title fights. Those were both stripped from him when he was tested positive for a banned substance. He would appeal that and win, with the decision being reversed.

How He Got Started

To understand how Jon Jones became so good at what he does that has enabled him to make so much money, you have to go back to the beginning. He was a wrestler in high school. In fact, he became the state champion in New York while attending Union Endicott High School. He would also play football, becoming quite proficient as a defensive lineman. He would actually play at Iowa Central Community College where his team would win the National Junior College Championship. He would then transfer to Morrisville State College. While there, he studied criminal justice. His passion, however, was mixed martial arts. So, he would drop out of college before graduating with the goal of turning pro.

It was in 2008 that he fought his first professional MMA bout. Within three months, he would win his first six fights. After that, in July of the same year, he was invited to fight in the UFC with only two weeks notice due to another fighter having to drop out. He would win that as well and go on to amass his impressive record in the UFC.

How He Does It

Fighting alone is not enough to earn you $10 million. In the case of Jon Jones, it is a combination of his training regime and his actual fighting style that many claim he has been so successful. In the past, he trained with Team Bomb Squad in New York. They are one of the more popular teams in the country and have turned out many successful fighters. Even during his suspensions, Jones was known to keep up his training. During one such suspension from the UFC, for example, he would begin training as a powerlifter.

In terms of his fighting style, Jones is regarded as one of the most innovative cage fighters that have ever been involved with MMA. He is able to use his skills as a wrestler as a defense strategy, while he has incredible to land punches in creative ways that always keep the opponent catching.
