How Kevin Costner Achieved a Net Worth of $250 Million

Kevin Costner is a famous and successful American actor who has also directed and produced films. He has also diversified into business and the music industry. During his career, this actor has won a Primetime Emmy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Academy Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. His career has also led to him becoming a very wealthy man with an estimated net worth of $250 million. Here is how Kevin Costner became so wealthy.

Costner’s Early Life

According to IMDb, Kevin Costner was born in Lynwood, California, on January 18, 1955. He was the youngest of three boys and he grew up in the Compton district of California. Costner attended California State University, Fullerton, from where he graduated with a BA in marketing and finance in 1975. During his time at college, Costner had become interested in dancing and acting, but this was only on an amateur level. A chance encounter with Richard Burton on a plane on his way back from his honeymoon encouraged Costner to pursue acting as a career. He took acting lessons five times a week while working initially as a marketing executive, and then in various other jobs, including giving tours of Hollywood, truck driving, and working on a fishing boat.

His Career

The actor finally landed his first film role in the film ‘Sizzle Beach, U.S.A’ in 1978. Filming continued into 1979, and the film was not released until 1981 with little success. It was later re-released in 1986. Costner’s film debut in terms of what hit the screens first was in the 1983 film ‘The Touch’. During the early 1980s, Costner had several other small roles and also did some work in commercials. His breakout role came when he was cast by director friend Lawrence Kasdan in the 1985 film ‘Silverado’. That same year, he had smaller roles in ‘American Flyers’ and ‘Fandango’.

After Costner played federal agent Eliot Ness in the 1987 film ‘The Untouchables’, he had achieved star status. The same year, he played the lead role in ‘No Way Out’. This led to him playing roles in hit films including ‘Field of Dreams’ and ‘Bull Durham’. He then took a turn in his career when he deciding to begin producing films. His production company ‘Tig Productions’ was formed in collaboration with producer Jim Wilson. Their first project was ‘Dances with Wolves’. Not only did Costner co-produce this 1990 epic film, but he also directed the film and starred in the lead role. Of the 12 Academy Awards for which this film was nominated, it won seven.

Over the next year, he had major roles in ‘Revenge’, ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’, and ‘JFK’. All of these films were commercially successful and secured Costner’s position as one of the top actors at that time. One of his most memorable roles was playing the titular role in the 1992 movie ‘The Bodyguard’ opposite Whitney Houston. Other films in which he appeared during the early 1990s included ‘A Perfect World’, ‘Wyatt Earp’, and ‘The War’. During the second half of the 1990s, Costner’s career took a downturn when he appeared in several films that were not as commercially successful as his previous projects. These included ‘The Postman’ and ‘Waterworld’.

His career was revived after the turn of the Millennium with the 2000s getting off to a good start with his role in ‘Thirteen Days’. Over the next few years, Costner appeared in several more successful films. Some of these included ‘Open Range’, ‘The Upside of Anger’, ‘The Guardian’, ‘Rumour Has It’, and ‘Mr. Brooks’. By 2008, Tig Productions was closed and became Tree House Films. This was the same year as he starred in ‘Swing Vote’. ‘The Company Man’, which was released in 2010, was one of Costner’s most successful films. Despite its success, he decided to take a break from acting and focus on directing. However, the projects he began working on at that time were never released.

Between 2011 and 2013, Costner appeared in both films and television series. Since 2014, the films in which Costner has appeared include ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’, ‘3 Days to Kill’, ‘Draft Day’, ‘Black or White’, ‘McFarland, USA’, ‘Hidden Figures’, and ‘Molly’s Game’. He landed his first regular television role in 2018 in the series ‘Yellowstone’. Most recently, Costner has had major roles in the films ‘The Highwayman’ and ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’, both of which were released in 2019.

Other Ventures

Although Kevin Costner is best known as an actor, he has also been involved in many ventures in other fields. One of his ventures is being the singer in a country-rock band called ‘Kevin Costner & Modern West’. The band has released two albums, gone on several tours, and appeared in a documentary about country music. Other ventures have included partially owning a baseball team, developing oil separation machinery, opening an attraction called ‘Tatanks: The Story of the Bison, and owning a casino called ‘Midnight Star’ in Deadwood.
