10 Things You Didn't Know about KeyCorp CEO Beth Mooney

Beth Mooney

Beth Mooney is both the CEO and the Chairwoman of the Board for KeyCorp. Generally speaking, KeyCorp is best-known to interested individuals because it is the parent company of KeyBank, which is headquartered in Cleveland, OH. Even though KeyBank is a regional bank, it is still a name of note when it comes to U.S. financial institutions. What Are 10 Things You Didn't Know About Beth Mooney?

1. Raised in Midland, MI

Mooney was raised in the city of Midland, which can be found in the state of Michigan. One of the most notable characteristics about the city is that it is home to the Dow Chemical Company, a manufacturer of plastics, chemicals, and other products that tends to sell to other businesses rather than to consumers. The location of the Dow Chemical Company is important because Mooney's father was a chemist working for the company while her mother was an English teacher.

2. Went to University of Texas at Austin

For her education, Mooney went to the University of Texas at Austin where she studied the subject of history. Said school is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System, so it should come as no surprise to learn that it has an excellent reputation. In particular, the University of Texas at Austin is an important center of research that spends hundreds of millions of dollars on such efforts on an annual basis with the result that its affiliates have secured 11 Nobel Prizes plus a host of other awards and accolades so far.

3. Went to Southern Methodist University

Besides her history degree, Mooney has an MBA that she earned at Southern Methodist University as well. Like its name states, Southern Methodist University was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, which is why it is now owned by the South Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. However, it is interesting to note that there are now more Catholics than Methodists enrolled at the school, which to be fair, isn't that unusual since the school is non-sectarian when it comes to its classes.

4. Can Be Persistent

Since she is a very successful businesswoman, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that Mooney can be a very persistent person. For instance, she managed to secure a position with Republic Bank of Dallas's management training program in 1979 in spite of the fact that she headed there unannounced. In her own words, Mooney spent three hours cajoling the head of the program to hire her while refusing to leave even though he saw no place for her in his program.

5. Believes in Three Drivers For Success

It is interesting to note that Mooney has stressed three factors for both personal and professional success. First, she believes that one should always do their best so that one will never have cause for regret. Second, she believes that people should be of service to their communities because their communities need them as much as their careers. Third, she believes that those who are helped by others should make sure to express their sense of gratitude sooner rather than later.

6. Puts the Onus on Employers to Establish Safe, Respectful Environments

Mooney is someone who believes that employers are responsible for establishing safe, respectful environments in which their employees can flourish. As such, she believes that employers need to have strong processes in place to handle the situation whenever an employee is found to have fallen short of this standard by having either harassed or otherwise mistreated other employees. Moreover, Mooney understands the importance of having a safe process for reporting, which is a critical factor that can deter mistreated employees from reporting what has happened for fear of retaliation when it is not existent.

7. Sees Both Ethical and Pragmatic Benefits to Diversity

On a related note, Mooney doesn't just see the promotion of diversity via inclusion as the right thing to do but also the pragmatic thing to do for businesses. This makes sense because inclusiveness can provide businesses with some very important benefits. For example, a reputation for inclusiveness is very appealing for a very wide range of employees, meaning that it can increase the business's chances of securing the talent needed to boost its performance. Likewise, a wider range of perspectives can save a business's management from falling into lockstep, which can happen with surprising ease when the relevant individuals come from similar backgrounds that make it difficult for them to spot potential issues that would be more evident to someone who has had very different experiences because of very different circumstances.

8. Believes that Opportunities Come with Obligations

It seems safe to say that Mooney is someone with a strong sense of duty. For proof, consider the fact that she has voiced the opinion that opportunities come with certain obligations. Essentially, Mooney believes that people should make the most of the opportunities that they receive for a couple of reasons. One, that is beneficial for their personal success. Two, that serves to pave the way for other people to follow in their footsteps.

9. Chair of the Board of Directors for the Cleveland Clinic

Naturally, Mooney is involved with organizations beyond KeyCorp. For example, she is the current Chair of the Board of Directors for the Cleveland Clinic, which is a position that speaks of immense trust in her capabilities. For those who are unfamiliar, the Cleveland Clinic is an Ohio-based nonprofit that is regarded as being one of the best hospital systems in the United States and beyond. Moreover, it plays an important role in biomedical research, meaning that it is involved in expanding the boundaries of human medicine on top of providing healthcare to those who need it.

10. Pioneering Figure

It is no exaggeration to say that Mooney's successes have made her into something of a pioneering figure in her chosen career. After all, she is the first woman to serve as the CEO of a top-20 U.S. bank, meaning that she has been a figure of inspiration for more than one person out there.
