10 Reasons to Visit Boneyard Beach in South Carolina

Boneyard Beach

Have you ever tried to think of a place to go on vacation and then come up completely blank? One that you might not have thought of just yet is Boneyard Beach, South Carolina. Also known as Bulls Head, this majestic place serves as the perfect backdrop for taking photographs, exploring an ancient forest or checking out the beach’s iconic lighthouse. There’s also plenty of wildlife that can be seen throughout the island’s many hiking trails. As a matter of fact, here’s a list of 10 things that you can do there that you and your family will love.

10. Take a walk along the beach

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that you can take a relaxing walk on the beach, but what will surprise you is the fact that there is no less than seven miles worth of beach scenery for you to take in at any one given time. There’s no doubt that you’re going to absolutely love it. The thing that you need to remember is that you should wear appropriate shoes and of course, remember that you are in South Carolina. That means that you need to keep an eye out for the wildlife, including alligators. It’s even worth noting that one area of the beach is known as Alligator Alley, so it’s best to keep your eyes peeled.

9. Check out a forgotten forest

Millions of years ago, there was a forest in the area that eventually became submerged in the ocean. That forest is now partially in view and almost perfectly preserved, almost as if you’re stepping back in time. It’s truly one of the most surreal things that you’ll ever see. You also have the opportunity to collect an enormous amount of driftwood from the area, so if that’s something that you’re interested in doing, you can collect to your heart’s content here.

8. Enjoy a picnic

One of the truly wonderful things about this particular island is that it doesn’t cost you to park in the area, something that is truly rare these days. It’s also one of the best picnic spots in the entire state, so if you want to pack a lunch and simply enjoy your time there, this is a great place to do exactly that.

7. Enjoy a sunrise expedition

You can also enjoy watching the sun come up, thanks to a company called Coastal Expeditions. They routinely take people out to the island and organize tours for them in the process. As such, you can get a tour with them to enjoy the sunrise, spend some time on the beach and maybe even collect some driftwood before you go back.

6. Collect shells

If you love collecting seashells, this is a perfect opportunity to do that because the way the tide comes into the beach, it washes up all kinds of seashells almost constantly. As such, you have the opportunity to collect a wide variety of different shells without even making an impact on the number of shells that are still left on the beach.

5. See some wildlife

There is also a lot of wildlife in the area, some of which has already been discussed (remember the alligators). Of course, if prehistoric scaly things are not exactly the thing you’re interested in, there’s plenty of other wildlife to see as well. Who knows, you might even be fortunate enough to see a dolphin or to swim by. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are some wild horses on nearby beaches, so it’s always possible that you might be able to catch sight of a few of them on your way to or from this particular location.

4. See the lighthouse

It’s true, there is a lighthouse right there on the beach. Anyone that loves lighthouses is going to enjoy having the opportunity to see this one up close and personal. At the moment, it’s not open for tours but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy being close to it and experiencing all of the majestic views that it has to offer.

3. Take some photographs

One of the main reasons that a lot of people come to the island is to take photographs. When you have the ocean, an ancient forest that is partially submerged, wildlife and seashells galore, it’s easy to understand why so many people want to get as many photographs as they possibly can. Add to that the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and it’s no wonder that novices and professionals alike want to photograph this area.

2. Go bird watching

If you really enjoy watching birds, this is a location that’s almost impossible to beat. That’s because they have roughly 275 different species of birds on the island. It definitely helps that the area is uninhabited and largely untouched. When you go there, it’s truly like you’re stepping back into an entirely different moment in time. In some cases, it almost feels like you’re on a different planet altogether. If you’re in the mood to see some birds and other wildlife that you probably haven’t ever seen before, then this is one of the best places that you can spend your day.

1. Go hiking

If you love the idea of being outdoors and going for a nice hike, then this is the perfect place to do exactly that. Along the way, you will undoubtedly see things that you’ve probably never seen before and you have the opportunity to decide how challenging (and how long) you want your hike to be. All the while, you have the backdrop of the sea and the island’s pristine beaches to enhance the experience.
