Maryland is an East-coast state that is known for its miles of coastline. There are numerous beaches spread out across its shoreline, but some beaches are better than others. Some are ocean beaches, but there are also a few lake and river beaches that are worth checking out. If you've not yet found your favorite, here are 10 of the best beaches in Maryland to check out.

10. Betterton Beach

Betterton Beach is in Kent County on the Chesapeake Bay. It's not far from Rock Hall beach. The beach is in a landscaped waterpark that is designed for family use. The beach is situated on 300 feet of shoreline that is designated for swimming with an additional 400 feet of other types of shoreline. There are plenty of amenities t this beach to make it an ideal location for everyone. You can fish on the jetty, use the public restrooms and bathhouse, use the pier and boat landing, or walk along the pier and boardwalk.

9. Hart-Miller State Park

The beach at Hart-Miller State Park is one of our most highly recommended places to take the entire family. It's on an Island in Chesapeake that requires boat access, but there is a great place to moor your boat along with the western side of the shore. The island is home to a sandy beach with 3,000 feet of beachfront access. The island is set up for a variety of recreational activities including a hiking trail that is nearly two miles in length, interpretive signs for educational purposes. The island is also home to Hawk Cove and Pleasure Island with angling opportunities and camping sites. ]

8. Calvert Cliffs State Park

Calvert Cliffs State Park offers 25 miles of shoreline on the Chesapeake Bay. It offers multiple opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, and more. There is a playground for the kids along with an archaeological area that contains fossils for those who enjoy a good dig. It's a fun place to fish and to explore with a freshwater area and a marsh.

7. Sandy Point State Park

Sandy Point State Park has a wonderful beach with the safety of designated swimming areas and lifeguards on duty between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm. It costs $4 per person to gain admission to this recreational area. You'll find 786 acres of beach, fishing, and boating areas. The park also features some wonderful amenities including a marina store where you can purchase food and beverages, fishing supplies, and boat rentals. There are also other concession stands for getting a quick bite to eat. The park is located on Chesapeake Bay's northwestern shore and is open from 7 am to dusk.

6. Assateague Island National Seashore

Assateague Island National Seashore is a wonderful place to visit with places to swim, and surf. It's an Island where you can also see the famed wild horses roaming freely. Assateague Island offers recreational areas on its sandy beaches with other recreation areas in its diverse ecosystem that also includes coastal bays, maritime forests, and salt marshes. You can also camp, kayak, or schedule guided tours of the island.

5. Elk Neck State Park

Elk Neck State Park offers some of the best beaches in the state of Maryland. The part is situated on 2,370 acres with a diverse ecosystem of sandy beaches, as well as white clay cliffs, marshlands, and wooded areas. It's a popular place for camping with 250 sites available or your choice of cabin rentals. Reservations are required in this park located on a peninsula in Cecil County.

4. North Beach

North Beach offers one of the best beachfront recreation areas to visit in Maryland. The beach is open from 6 am to dusk during the spring and summer months and from 8 am to dusk throughout fall and winter. There are wonderful sandy beach expanses and designated swimming areas. Here you'll find bathrooms, bathhouses, a pier, and a boardwalk. There are also fishing areas. You can also rent umbrellas, inner tubes, and beach chairs. There is a fee for access to the beach and you must follow the rules for everyone's safety.

3. Kent Island Beaches

Kent Island is the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay. It is the home of Terrapin nature Park in Stevensville, Maryland. It offers a public beach. There is an additional dog beach designated for families with furry friends. It's located on 276 acres with sandy beaches and asphalt-covered running trails. You have your choice of picnicking in the designated areas, enjoying recreation in the dunes, or sunning yourself on the sandy beach. You'll also find a biking path a parking lot for convenience, tidal wetlands to observe the local wildlife, and a footbridge to take you over the tidal marsh. You must obtain a beach permit to park in the lots. The park is open from dawn to dusk.

2. Gunpowder Falls State Park

Gunpowder Falls State Park is a popular attraction. It's a pristine beach that frequently closes when filled with visitors. Plan to get there early to ensure you don't miss out. It's a premier park for day use. One of the best beaches in Maryland is the Hammerman Area offering 1,500 feet of beachy shoreline for swimming on the Gunpowder River's banks. There are plenty of amenities in the area. You will find playgrounds, picnic pavilions with tables, fishing, hiking areas, and kayak and canoe rentals.

The Ocean City Beach is in Ocean City, Maryland. The hours of access are 5 am to 10 pm. It's a beautiful and safe beach to visit with your family. There are lifeguards on duty for swimmers and regular security patrols. It's a hot spot that fills up quickly during the summer months. Ocean City Beach is ideal for surf anglers, swimmers, and other beach enthusiasts. Amenities include rinse-off stations and restrooms. You can also bring your pets, but you must keep them on a leash. The beach closes at 10 pm while the crew grooms and maintains the recreational areas for full enjoyment of the following day.
