He also represented the Mississippi state in the tobacco litigation era of the 1990s. Scruggs represented a national class petition of patients against HMOs and helped hundreds of homeowners file lawsuits against insurance companies after Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, Richard Scruggs's impressive career in law was ruined after his indictment in a judicial bribery scheme in 2007. He was sentenced to six years in federal prison and was released in 2014.
