Why Vetigel is Considered the “Band-Aid of the Future”

Vetigel is an excellent example of a product that can serve as a substitute for traditional bandages. However, it is an injectible gel, which provides it with a number of characteristics that can make it useful under circumstances for which bandages are unsuitable. As a result, while Vetigel is a veterinary product, it is no wonder that interested parties are looking into potential human applications as well.

What Does Vetigel Do?

Simply put, Vetigel uses a plant-based polymer to create a mesh, which serves to seal up the wound that it is being used to treat. Since Vetigel is an injectable gel, this means that it can be used on both external and internal wounds, which is an important consideration because of the inherent challenges of treating internal wounds.

Why Is This So Important?

Generally speaking, bandages and bandage substitutes see use for a number of reasons. First, they can speed up the rate at which wounds heal, thus enabling the patient to return to normal as soon as possible. For those who are curious, this is because while scabs serve an important purpose in protecting wounds, they are formed from dead, dried-up cells that will impede the progress of the healthy cells that will be responsible for healing the wounded areas. Second, bandages and bandage substitutes serve to insulate the wound from bacteria and other contaminants, which can worsen the wound as well as cause further complications. Third, scabs are far from being impervious to further harm, meaning that a bandage or a bandage substitute can do a great deal of good by providing the patient with an additional layer of protection for the wounded area. These are but some of the reasons that bandages and bandage substitutes are important, with Vetigel being no exception to this particular rule.

With that said, Vetigel has a number of characteristics that make it very promising indeed. For example, its use is convenient, which is always a consideration when it comes to a product. However, the importance of that particular consideration pales in comparison to its uses for treating internal bleeding.

In short, internal bleeding is much more challenging to treat than external bleeding. In significant part, this is because sites showing internal bleeding are nowhere near as accessible as sites showing external bleeding. After all, imagine the difficulty of applying a bandage to an internal wound compared to the difficulty of applying a bandage to an external wound, which is particularly problematic because unchecked internal bleeding can proceed to cause a number of serious medical problems such as hemorrhagic shock. On top of this, there can some things that can be done with most external wounds that can’t be done with internal wounds.

For an example, consider how pressure can be used in combination with bandages to stop the bleeding of external wounds, which isn’t possible with internal wounds situated close to organs because exerting pressure on the organs can actually cause even more problems. Never mind the difficulties of actually putting pressure on the right spots when it comes to an internal wound. Summed up, it should be clear that internal bleeding is a much more serious problem than external bleeding when all other factors are the same, which is why there is such a need for products that can help with internal bleeding.

Regardless, Vetigel is beneficial in this regard because it is much easier to use it to patch up internal wounds than using something like, say, traditional bandages. There is still the issue of getting the gel to the right place, but that issue is much smaller than the issues that would arise from attempting to use traditional bandages, which are not a practical solution under such circumstances. As a result, should Vetigel prove to be as good as it is being made to sound, that could prove very fortuitous to a lot of people out there.

After all, while internal bleeding isn’t exactly an everyday kind of injury that everyone will experience at some point, it is by no means as rare as most people would like it to be. As a result, a product that can help treat said problem while maximizing convenience in the process could stand to help a lot of people out there while also cutting down on the medical costs. Due to this, Vetigel is well worth keeping a close eye on.
