A Closer Look at The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness

2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness

Subaru has long been a stalwart in the American automotive market. Among their rather versatile line up, the Subaru Forester has been one of the most celebrated SUVs ever made. Where other car companies fail, Subaru seems to excel. As such, they've created a long list of automobiles that have an excellent safety record and a solid performance record to boot, along with a reputation for reliability. The Forester has long been among that group. For the 2022 model year, they are doing things slightly differently, creating the Subaru Forester Wilderness. If you think that you love the original Subaru Forester, just wait until you see this one.

Designed to Go Off-Road

One of the things that makes the Forester Wilderness stand out is the fact that it is designed for off-roading adventures. In fact, some might even argue that it takes those adventures to the next level. Subaru has accomplished this by including increased ground clearance when compared to the original Forester. They also have additional skid plates attached to the bottom of the vehicle at special angles in order to protect critical components such as the oil pan. One of the major changes includes the symmetrical all-wheel drive that is designed specifically for off-road activities. Subaru has long been known for its selection of all-wheel drive vehicles, that is nothing new. However, the symmetrical all-wheel drive makes it easier to go off-roading in even the toughest of conditions without worrying about getting stuck. In short, it provides the highest level of functionality, regardless of the terrain or the weather conditions involved.

Additional Changes

To say that this is an entirely new vehicle would be a mistake. At its heart, it is a Subaru Forester but it's sort of like the Forester’s bigger, beefier cousin, more like a Ford or a Chevy. As such, it has an advanced traction management system to go with it's all-wheel drive and of course, the fenders, bumpers and even the center of the hood are all clad in a protective material that prevents glare and keeps scratches to a minimum. Perhaps one of the more interesting things to come along in quite some time is the anodized roof rack, capable of holding a weight of up to 800 pounds. To be more exact, the roof rack can handle practically anything you decide to throw at it, but it was designed to have a tent thrown on the roof rack itself. If you have never seen one of these types of tents, you're in for a real treat.

It looks like a regular tent, only the floor is quite stiff. It attaches to the roof rack securely and you use a ladder to enter and exit the tent. It gives you an added level of privacy and it also makes it far less likely that you will end up sharing that tent with some type of wild animal that you would prefer to stay as far away from you as possible. For anybody that's not terribly keen on the idea of camping on the ground with bugs, snakes and anything else that might wander up, this is a definite plus. The fact that the Subaru Forester Wilderness was designed specifically to accommodate this type of camping only goes to show that Subaru really has thought of practically everything.

Control at Your Fingertips

Another thing that makes the Subaru Forester Wilderness stand out is its 182 horsepower 2.5 liter flat-four-cylinder engine and its capability for towing a lot of weight, up to 3,000 pounds. That practically doubles the amount of weight that other models of the Forester can handle. It also has a specially-designed system that allows you to press a button from the control panel and then descend steep terrain with relative ease as opposed to being forced to shift into low gear in the more traditional sense. In short, this vehicle allows you to descend with the help of an on-board computer that senses the power and braking that needs to be applied to a particular wheel at any one given time.

It can apply whatever action is needed simultaneously, thereby taking the guesswork out of descending this type of terrain. If you've ever had to drive a more traditional vehicle down a very steep hill, or worse yet, a mountain slope, you know how difficult it can sometimes be. Vehicles that don't have this type of system have a tendency to want to run away with you, even when they are in low gear. In addition, there is always the potential for over-revving the engine without meaning to. If you don't know what you're doing, you could have an accident or you could potentially damage the engine or transmission. This system takes all of that stress and worry away and puts it squarely in the hands of the on-board computer, which essentially does everything for you.

Quality That Remains

Of course, this version of the Forester still maintains all of the things that have caused people to love Subaru vehicles in the first place. As such, you don't have to worry about losing the special safety features such as collision avoidance, side curtain airbags and a safety rating that is literally second to none. The vehicle even incorporates the popular Eyesight safety system, something that has become standard on virtually all Subaru models. If you think that this is just another trim option for the Subaru Forester, one in which you can pay a higher price, think again. It has some very real amenities that are specific to individuals that spend a great deal of time camping or otherwise spending time outdoors. It is perfectly designed for off-road activities, camping and tackling terrain that would be far too challenging for other vehicles. For individuals who enjoy these types of activities enough for it to become a lifestyle, this vehicle could quickly become something seen as a necessity, not a luxury.
