The Five Best Times to Visit Australia and Why

If you've always wanted to visit Australia and you've made your decision to book a trip, there are a few things that you need to know before you schedule the dates for your journey. There are certain times that are far better than others. It's important to understand why this is a big consideration that needs to be made. We've put together a simple guide that lets you in on information that you really need to know so you can make the most out of your trip to this large and amazing country and come home with memories that will last for a lifetime.

When is the best time to visit Australia?

This really depends on where in Australia you're planning to go. It's one of the largest countries in the world and there is a lot to see and do while you're there. The beaches are popular tourist destinations and so is the Great Barrier Reef. There are also numerous vineyards if you're fond of wine tasting. There's a little something for everyone in Australia but timing is key.

Considering the weather in Australia

Australia has seasons like most other places in the world. The weather can be very different from region to region and it can be a lot different than it is in other countries at certain times of the year. You can count on Australia's seasons to be the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. When it's cold in December, Australia will be enjoying their summertime which lasts from December throughout February. Their winter begins in June and goes through August.

Regional differences

The Northern Territory of Australia, including Darwin experience temperatures of the high seventies in its winter time. Summers in this region tend to reach extreme heat and when it rains, it comes down in buckets. It's not a lot of fun to bake your brains out or to be drenched in rain, so this is something to think about if Darwin is your destination.

In the southern part of Australia which includes Melbourne and Australia, the temperatures in the summertime are usually in the low seventies. Winters are cool. It's a good idea to pack for both warm and cool weather any time of the year that you plan to visit this region because you can never be sure of what the temperature will be like and it can change fairly quickly.
The East Coast of Australia that begins at Melbourne and extends to Cairns is the most common landing spot for visitors from the United States. This is a very large and open part of the country. There are wide variations in the weather here. If you plan to visit the Great Barrier Reef, you may be interested in knowing that the temperature is usually warm all year round. Summer and spring are the wet seasons so tourism is usually slow because of all the moisture. It's a good time to go if you want to avoid the crowds, but not if you don't like the rain.

The Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is located within an hour drive of Brisbane. This area enjoys year-round weather that is described as being beautiful. It seems this is one of the areas that is great to visit any time of year. Five hundred miles south is the city of Sydney which is the cultural center of the country. The beaches are beautiful. In the winter time, the temperatures can be a little chilly, but not cold and there is usually some amount of rain. If you plan to visit the beaches in this area, summer is recommended with its warm temperatures, but spring and autumn are optimum times for going.

Best visiting months for wine lovers

If you want to go for the special wine events that are held in Australia, then the best times of year to go are April through early June. These are the months that most of the wineries are holding their annual events and festivals.

If you're planning a trip to Australia, consider where you're planning to go within this vast country. Plan your trips in accordance with the recommended months to visit and you can even spend a few moments online to scope out any events you may be interested in to find out when they're being held. A little-advanced planning can make your trip to Australia far more enjoyable if it's timed just right. The five best times to go to Australia are during Australia's winter for Darwin and the surrounding area, to avoid extreme heat and rain downpours. The next best time is from May through early June if you want to visit the Wine country during its festival season. The third best time is in Spring or Autumn for the Gold Coast. The East Coast is best visited in Australia's winter and the fifth best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is in the spring or autumn, but really, you would do well in avoiding the crowds in the summer time and this is the one location where it's okay to show up any time of the year if you don't mind a little rain in the winter.
