Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar is an American politician and a member of the Democratic party. She holds a seat in the US House of Representatives for the 5th congressional district for the State of Minnesota. She was elected to the seat in 2019. It’s been reported that the congresswoman has a net worth of $3 million, but how did she become so wealthy? We looked into her personal and career history to find out how she made her money and here is what we discovered

Her early years

According to Glusea, Ilhan was born in Mogadishu, Somalia to Nur Omar Mohamed and Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein. She was born on October 4, 1982, and is currently 38 years old. She has six older brothers and sisters and is the youngest of the children. When she was just 2 years old she lost her mother and he father and grandfather raised the children.

Fleeing their homeland

Her young life wasn’t easy in Somalia. There was tremendous political upheaval and her family knew they had to get the children out of the country. Not having a mother was just one of the hardships she experienced as a child. Her family was forced to flee from their home city of Mogadishu. They made it to the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, which was not far from the Somali border. They lived in the camp for four years before her family was able to secure asylum in the United States. Upon their admission into the US, the first city they lived in was New York City. They arrived in 1995, but soon relocated to Arlington, Virginia. They spent a short time there before her father got a job as a taxi driver in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he settled his family. He later was hired at the post office in the city.

Her early introduction to politics

At the age of 14, Ilhan served as an interpreter for her grandfather. He liked to attend caucus meetings and she would go to interpret. This was her first exposure to the world of politics. These early years were formative and she remembered the things that she heard at the meetings. She attended Thomas Edison High School, graduating in 2001. After High School she attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in political science.

Ilhan advances her political career

According to Go Banking Rates, she was a policy fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. She became a Senior Policy Aide for the Minneapolis City Council. In 2016, she was elected to the District 60B Minnesota House of Representatives. During her term, she was assigned to the Civil Law & Data Practices Policy, State Government Finance, and Higher Education & Career Readiness Policy and Finance committees. She continued in her political career and was elected to the fifth congressional district of Minnesota seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in January of 2019.

Ups and downs of political life

Omar is outspoken and voices her progressive opinions. She believes in Medicare for everyone, raising the minimum wage, and providing tuition-free college opportunities for everyone. She has been at the center of controversy after making disparaging remarks about Israel’s government, comparing it to an apartheid regime, and it’s caused a debate and stirred up heavy backlash. This didn’t move her as she publicly stated that she is happy her comments made people start to talk about it. She made history by becoming the first Somalian-American woman to become a member of congress.

Her personal life

According to the MD Daily Record, Ilhan married Ahmed Nur Sail Elmi in 2009, but the marriage ended in 2017. She married Ahmed Hirsi in 2018, but the relationship only lasted for one year ending in divorce. Her third husband is Tim Mynett. The couple was married in 2020. She has three children named Isra Hirsi, Ilwad Hirsi, and Adnan Hirsi with two children from her first marriage and one from the second.

Her net worth

As of April of 2021, Ilhan Omar has a net wealth of $3 million. It’s been confirmed that her current salary is around $125,000 per year as a politician. She has made most of her fortune through her career as a political activist and politician. She has an impeccable record. This is the only career that she has had since graduating from college and aside from any potential settlements through a divorce, it has been her sole source of income. Ilhan is a successful woman in her chosen career path and it has helped her to become wealthy in the process. We did not see any evidence of real estate transactions or any other type of sideline career.

Final thoughts

Ilhan Omar has an interesting life history. She lost her mother when she was little more than a toddler and she had to flee her home country of Somalia at an early age. She was raised by her father and grandfather and had to spend four years in a refugee camp before making it across the US border. Her family immigrated to America legally, following all of the rules. Although her family had a very difficult time just staying alive, they made it to a haven. Ilhan has not let the negative events in her life stop her from moving forward and becoming a very successful politician. She has seen some of the worst things that bad politics can cause in a country firsthand. She is one of the fortunate few who made it out of a dangerous situation and this has undoubtedly helped to shape her current views on politics and social issues. She continues to speak on behalf of the people of Minnesota and the United States as a whole. She has a remarkable backstory and whether you agree with her views, or have different opinions about politics, she is doing her part to make a difference in the lives of others.
