How Matthew Perry Achieved a Net Worth of $120 Million

Matthew Perry is a successful and internationally recognized actor. He is probably best known for playing Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom ‘Friends’, a role which he played for a decade. However, he has enjoyed many other successes in his career. Due to this success, it is now estimated that Matthew Perry has a net worth of $120 million. Here is how this talented actor became so wealthy.

Matthew Perry’s Early Life

Although Matthew Perry was born in Massachusetts on August 19, 1969, he was raised in Ontario. This has led to him having dual American and Canadian citizenship. His mother was a journalist, while his father is an actor and former model, so it is possible that Perry followed in his father’s footsteps by choosing a career in the limelight. His parents divorced before he turned one, and this led to the move to Ontario. As a teen, Perry was a keen lawn tennis player. He also developed a passion for acting and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to pursue this career. There, he attended The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, from which he graduated in 1987. While he was still at school, he began performing improv comedy at the LA Connection.

His Early Career

Perry’s first significant role in television was a series called ‘Second Chance’, in which he played Chazz Russell for 13 episodes. This series then became ‘Boys Will Be Boys’, which starred Perry as Chazz. When the single season of this series was complete, Perry landed his first film role, and made his film debut in the 1988 film ‘A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon’. Just a year later, he appeared in ‘Growing Pains’. Therefore, Matthew Perry was quickly establishing himself in both the television and film industries. His career continued with many guest roles until he landed a regular role in the CBS sitcom ‘Sydney’ in 1990. His next regular role was in the ABC sitcom ‘Home Free’, which was aired in 1993 for 11 episodes.

Perry’s Time in ‘Friends’

In 1993, Perry tried to secure an audition for the pilot of a new series written by Marta Kauffman and David Crane called ‘Six of One’. This was later to become the hit sitcom ‘Friends’. Initially, he did not get an audition, but it was later decided to give him a reading. This landed him the role of Chandler Bing in the series. Starring in ‘Friends’ catapulted Perry to international fame, and it is this series that is the source of a large percentage of his current wealth. Perry appeared in this series for the full ten seasons from 1994 to 2004. However, he also continued to work on other projects during his time at ‘Friends’. Some of the films in which he appeared during this time included ‘Fools Rush In’, ‘The Whole Nine Yards’, ‘The Whole Ten Yards’, ‘Almost Heroes’, ‘Serving Sara’, and ‘Three to Tango’.

Career Post-Friends

When ‘Friends’ came to an end in 2004, Perry continued to enjoy success in his career. He also diversified into directing as he made his directorial debut when he directed an episode of ‘Scrubs’. He also had a guest role in this series. The films in which Matthew Perry has appeared since ‘Friends’ ended include ‘Hoosiers II: Senior year’, ‘Numb’, ‘Birds of America’, and ’17 Again’. In the latter, he shared the role of Mike O’Donnell with Zac Efron, with Efron playing the young Mike and Perry playing the older version. Perry has also continued to work in television in recent years. His first series regular role after the end of ‘Friends’ was playing Matt Able in ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’. In 2011, he played Ben Donovan in ‘Mr. Sunshine’. Other series in which he has had regular roles include ‘Go On’ and ‘The Odd Couple’. Perry also had roles in both ‘The Good Fight’ and ‘The Kennedys After Camelot’ in 2017. Since then, he has done very little in terms of acting work, although he has appeared as a guest on talk shows.

Matthew Perry’s Net Worth

Now, it is estimated that Matthew Perry has a net worth of $120 million. Most of this money has been made through his career as an actor. For example, Celebrity Net Worth says that he was earning a substantial sum for his role in ‘Friends’. During the first season, the main cast members all earned $22,500 for each episode. The following season, they had a pay rise that earned them $40,000 per episode. Their salaries continued to rise each year until they were earning $1 million each per episode for seasons nine and 10. He and the other cast members will continue to earn money from the royalties, and this could total up to $20 million over the next few years. This means that his personal net worth will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. Although it is his acting career that has made Matthew Perry so wealthy, he has also made some money through good investment and real estate decisions. For example, he bought a large penthouse in Century City, California, for $20 million in 2017. He then sold this property in August 2019 for $35 million.

His Personal Life

In his personal life, Matthew Perry has dated several high profile women. He has had relationships with both Yasmin Bleeth and Julia Roberts. His longest relationship was with actress and model Lizzie Caplan, who he dated from 2006 to 2012. He has never been married or had children. Perry has had some personal struggles in his life as he has battled addictions to prescription medications, amphetamines, methadone, and alcohol. He has spent some time in rehabilitation centers for support in recovering from these addictions. He currently lives in Malibu.
