Robin Sharma is a Canadian author who became well-known for writing the book series “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.” He’s a prolific author whose works have been well-read. In addition, he’s done many other interesting things in his life, such as graduate from Yale. We wanted to learn more about him and how he came to be such an insightful writer and we were amazed at what we learned. For all the fans of his books and beyond, here are 20 things that you probably didn’t know about Robin Sharma, to help you know him a little better.

1. Robin is a leading expert on leadership

Robin Sharma is a famous expert on leadership and his knowledge is tapped by some of the most famous people on the face of the earth. In fact, he is rated among the top 5 experts on the topic in the entire world. He’s been consulted by royalty, famous rock stars and other celebrities.

2. Sharma wrote a phenomenal bestseller

Sharma wrote a book titled “The Leader Who Had No Title.” This work is perhaps one of his greatest. It has made it to the top of bestselling book lists across America and in other countries as well. This is just one of many books tht he has written but it is so packed with useful insights that he has received numerous accolades and high praise for writing it.

3. Robin Sharma is in high demand in the business world

Robin has been speaking for almost two decades, sharing his insights on effective leadership and he’s considered to be a world-class speaker and expert on leadership principles. He’s been invited to speak at several large organizations including PwC, FedEx, Oracle, HP, Nike, Microsoft, GE, and even NASA.

4. He’s in the ivy league class

When prestigious institutions of higher learning have an important event coming up, Robin Sharma is a familiar name and if at all possible, they schedule him to speak. He’s been invited to speak at Yale University at important gatherings because of his status as a world-class expert. Even his name carries a lot of weight because he always has something to say that is useful for both current business leaders and for those who aspire to become leaders one day.

5. He was born in Uganda

Robin Sharma was born on March 18, 1965, in Uganda. a country in East Africa. Although this was the place of his birth his nationality is Canadian. His home town is Winnipeg, in Manitoba, Canada, which makes him a Canadian citizen.

6. Sharma has an audience of millions with his message

Sharma reaches his audience of more than six hundred million people annually. He does this through his books, his speaking engagements and his posts on social media. His primary goal is to help people to do their best work in a world that is constantly changing. His worlds aid in helping them realize their leadership capacities and to perform to their peak. Some of the topics that he covers include personal responsibility, ingenuity, mastery, and productivity.

7. He self-published

When you write a book, getting it published can take years if it happens at all. Publishers are very picky about working with unsolicited manuscripts and this can make it difficult for writers who are not already published. When Mr. Sharma wrote his book “MegaLiving” in 1994, he self-published it. He also did the same with “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” series, but fortunately, after it was published, Harper Collins publishing picked it up for distribution. This was a break that he needed, but he took the initiative to do it himself and he didn’t give up. This is the kind of attitude and spirit that is found in a true leader. It’s having a steely resolve and overcoming obstacles to achieve a realistic goal, regardless of the circumstances.

One of the most unique aspects of Robin Sharma’s approach to leadership is that he insists that there is no title required to be a leader. 9. Robin Sharma is also a CEO

Sharma founded a global learning firm that is called Sharma Leadership International Inc. It is through this organization that he bases the headquarters and operations for the work that he does teaching people about his highly effective methods of transformation and personal growth. He leads this large company with an international client base as an expert in the field. He knows what is involved in overseeing the day to day operations.

10. He became a lawyer at a young age

Before Sharma established Sharma Leadership International, he was a litigation lawyer. He attended the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in Canada. He earned two degrees in law including his Masters. He very easily could have opted for a career in law, but instead, he had a passion for leadership and for helping others to realize the potential that lies within themselves. We see that by following his true passion, success and financial gain followed.

11. He’s a single father

Robin was married to Alka Sharma, but the relationship didn’t work out and the two divorced. They had two children together. Sharma shared that his two kids are his greatest blessings and after that, the work that he does comes second. Here is a guy that has his priorities straight.

12. His father was an inspiration for him

Robin was born in 1964 to Shiv and Shashi Sharma. He was just one year old when the family moved to Canada. They are of Indian descent. His mother was a teacher and his dad a physician. His father inspired him to follow his dreams. He also gave him encouragement to hold onto ideas that were good and not just think about them, but to actually take action. We can tell that he took this advice to heart because Robin Sharma is definitely a man of action.

13. He’s from a family of professionals

Robin’s parents were both educated professionals and they set this good example for him and his younger brother. Robin went off to become a lawyer turned CEO, and his brother Sanjay is an eye surgeon in Canada. In a way, both of the sons followed after their father, and although Robin is not a physician he did complete his education with a graduate degree in law.

14. Sharma took a chance on a change of career

Sometimes you just have to take a chance if you want to make changes in your life. While he was an attorney at law, he quit his job. He wrote a book and had his mom do the editing. He used a Kinko’s shop to make the copies. He printed 2,000 copies of the book and stored them at his home. His first and second books were do-it-yourself projects, but he had a vision and a dream and he was doing what was necessary to forge a new life for himself, and it all worked out because look where he is today.

15. He likes to get out and enjoy recreation

Robin Sharma is a regular guy like anyone else and he doesn’t spend all of his time teachings or running his business. there are times when he has to get away to relax and be himself without all the demands of his clients and business affairs. We learned that he has some favorite activities to do in his off time. He likes to travel, and go backpacking, he enjoys being out in nature, sailing, skiing, having a great conversation, reading, and music. He gives so much that he has to go out and recharge his own batteries every now and then.

16. Robin has a few favorite movies

There is a lot that you can tell about someone by knowing what movies are their favorites. We learned from Nightskymine Blogspot that he’s a fan of some really cool flicks. His favorites include “Dead Poet’s Society,” “Life is Beautiful” “Gladiator,” “Scent of a Woman,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Braveheart,” “Million Dollar Baby,” and “The Matrix.” Many of these films are inspirational because they are moving on an emotional level and they get the viewers stirred up inside. We see in Gladiator and Braveheart two men who were born leaders and they were placed at a disadvantage, but it made them no less brave and no less were they true born leaders. Both rose above their circumstances and maintained their sense of right and wrong to death.

17. Robin Sharma is respected by world leaders and royalty

We were impressed to discover that Mr. Sharma has made an impact on people from around the world and from all walks of life. He is even endorsed by dignitaries, heads of state and by the British Royal Family. Desmond Tutu, Nobel Prize winner was also a fan, along with Jon Bon Jovi, rock star. He’s touched a variety of people and they have a high level of respect for the man and for the professional.

18. He knows what it feels like when success is elusive

When you look at Robin Sharma now, you see a positive and highly successful professional who seems to have it all. He’s well educated, is an expert in his field, he’s highly respected on an international level and his opinions are solicited. There was, however, a time in his life when things weren’t going as perfectly as he had envisioned. When he quit his job to become a writer, his first book didn’t go over and it wasn’t a success. It was his first attempt at professional writing and this is not unusual, but he went through a period of time when he felt empty. His work as a litigation lawyer didn’t give him the sense of fulfillment that he knew was out there for him. Instead of continuing in a job for which he had no passion, he followed his heart and didn’t look back, but it wasn’t an easy time for him.

19. He’s learned a lot in his 55 years

Robin Sharma has had his ups and his downs throughout his lifetime. He has a lot to offer the world, but it also has a lot to offer him. He’s lived for nearly six decades and he has gained some valuable experiences in life. He shares these with all who will listen in hopes that they will be motivated to find their inner resources and draw upon them. Robin is a skilled teacher at heart and his teachings are easy to understand. He doesn’t talk above his audience, but rather in a manner that is easy to comprehend.

20. He’s a master and he can show you how to do likewise

There is only one Robin Sharma, but there is also there is only one you. He’s learned how to master a great many things, including his self-concept This is one of the things that he has to offer, is to teach others how to gain mastery in their lives and to tap into their inner resources and build upon what is already there. Of course, we continue to learn until the day we die, and sometimes we just need someone to tell us the things that we already knew but might have forgotten. Robin Sharma is a phenomenal human being and we owe him thanks for sharing his knowledge for the betterment of all.
